What should a Alpine 4150 amp sell for?
What should a Alpine 4150 amp sell for?
I picked a up PDX 100.4 at a stereo shop in Santa Ana, CA for 285.00 and that included tax. I honestly dont know if they were an authorized dealer but for that kind of savings I dont really care. If the amps can be sold for that kind of discount the authorized dealers must make a killing on them. I know authorized dealers many times are limited to what they can sell them for and in this case it looks like they are required to sell them for MSRP but when I can pick it up for almost half off its hard to justify the warranty cost.
being an authorized dealer we must try to stay in buisness, this means keeping our customers happy. we are not supposed to sell below "MAP" which is sale price. the pdx 4.150 retails at $750. we sell it at MAP. those stores that sell any equipment for that cheap are mostly selling "B stock" and does not have any warrenty or serial numbers.
Dont get me wrong I try to save money whenever I can also, think we all do.But
Lets say you are out in Havasu for a vacation with the wife and kids. All is going well then your stereo stops playing. The fun is over. At least for the peeps I deal with.
Now had a reputable shop in Havasu sold you that amp for a fair price.(of course all try to make money on most everything they sell) Think thats business. Your stereo would be fixed as soon as poss somtimes even on the water. The bill you would receive for this service would be an apology for the inconveinance.
I would not want to deal with an unhappy family to save 214.99.
Not to mention the cost of replacing the bad amp could eat that up real fast. With no warranty or after sale service. Agreed though somtimes finances force things.
And I know this is all moot if you dont boat in Havasu.

I know you were referring to the 4.150 and I was referring to the 4.100. My speakers are 85 RMS so the extra 50 watts would be wasted for the most part. (amp certificate says 129 watts per channel though). My point was the large price discrepancy. The 150 retails at 700 and the 100 at 500 (Crutchfield). The place I went will sell them for 265 and 369 before tax. The serial numbers are still on mine and it is not B stock as they are marked to indicate that and the dealer said if anything happens to it they would replace it (he did not say fix it) so he probably gets it from an authorized dealer and turns it in under warranty.
I know I run the risk of it failing but for the savings I can almost get another amp (I went and picked another up today) If I bought all my stereo equipment in Havasu I might consider paying full price for the convenience of getting it fixed right there but this stuff generally gets done in the off season when the boat is in SoCal so that particular benefit wouldn’t exist for me anyway, unless you know a dealership that will drive from Corona to Havasu if I need them.
I am a business owner myself and understand making money. The dealer that sold it to me was making money, so as close as I can tell that’s probably more than a 100% mark up and to me that's gouging. Good thing the stereo manufacturers aren’t held to the same standard as oil companies.
I realize that the dealers are held to the MAP for the units so its not your fault that you keep the prices where they are but if I find a deal that I believe is worth the (in my opinion) small risk then so be it.
Got it.........................
