    Default sub/amp question

I have a system in the new boat that has 2 JL 12w3V3's in some small .83 cu ft boxes, minus the sub displacement. Jl calls for 1.0 cu ft sealed plus the sub. These 2 subs are powered by 1 JL 500/5 and are wired parallel to the 250w output giving each 125w. They have a fast hit and I like more booming bass, Ghetto bass.

There is another 12W3V3 in a smaller sealed box in the front of the boat aimed towards the cuddy, this box came apart and needs to be rebuilt. This sub is powered by another JL 500/5 and gets a full 250w.

Each of the 500/5's has 2 pair of 6 1/2 coaxials wired to the 100w front outputs. The rear fill channels are not used and only put out 25w.

I have 1 more 500/5 that does not have a sub hooked to it, just 2 pairs of 6 1/2 speakers.

Why would the installer not hook up one of the rear 12's to this amp so each rear sub gets 250w instead of 125w ?

Head unit is an Alpine 9857 and Wired For Sound did the work in 06.

Has anyone used the 12W3V3 in a ported enclosure? I would put in some better subs but I am limited by the 250w rating of the existing amps.

I think I'm going to make some 1.75 cu ft ported boxes and wire each amp to it's own sub. I dont really have alot of room under the rear seat though with the gas filler hose needing to be boxed in. The Perko and the hyd hatch pressure relief under the seat.

Ya OK what ever you say Bobby! With all the research I been doing on upgrading my stereo, that would make more since to power up the subs a bit with there own amp's. I do believe that a bigger inclosure's will give you a more rolling type bass......

How do you guys like that new Mochine?

I already have the 1500w amp and 2 of the subs I need but dont want to re-design everything. It all started when I wanted to adjust the sound, and set the gains on the amps. I discovered the front box was coming apart. Not unusual when mdf gets wet. I figured while I have it home for a month I will get it set up the way I want it. The old boat stereo could kill fish and I have most of it in the garage.

I love the boat! I just cant ever leave a stereo alone.

If we bought the toon I would only need 2 speakers! I dont think I need everything finished to run to Catalina but I'm going to try!

I just got a friggin' headache reading this shiznit....lol

Frank at Car Toyz re-did the setup last year. Made some changes to how it was wired to the amps and also a few other things. He would be a good source to talk to about it.

I bet that front one got wet recently before I had AJ take care of the transom bolts. At least that is all I can think of.

    Ghetto blasting....and shit

This is one of the subs I have.
    28lbs each

    RE audio 12"

This is the desert speaker. JBL 1500 G2 15" 300w sub and horn tweeter 150w built in amp. This thing will SHUT DOWN almost everyone's stereo setup at tailgates house parties and the desert! It runs on a tiny inverter and only pulls 175 watts of power. Thats like a laptop.

I'm not worried, I am actually happy to get to do some stereo work to it. It is a favorite past time of mine. There is some nice equipment in the boat and I just want to get it all dialed in........and shit.

you should be fine with the boxes the size they are. If you want to trick the woofers into thinking ithey are in a bigger box, go to michaels or a craft store and get some poly fill (the stuff they stuff pillows with). put 2 bags in each box. as far as why it is wired the way it is? I have no idea. maybe they had to wire the subs to get the correct load on the amps?? but being they are dual voice coils you can most likely get each sub wired to its own channel (as long as the 2 subs dont share a box. (if they do you will run into some problems). I would start with stuffing the boxes.

I'm used to filling boxes with polyfill when they have to be made a little too small. These are the single 4 ohm voicecoil version and the amps put out 250w at 4 or 2 ohm. I already made 1 new sealed box for the front and resin coated it, in my spare time

RE SX12. prob from 05 as well. I had 2 in my Eliminator and loved them. I was giving them significantly more than 250w though. I dont really want to buy anymore equip but thanks for the offer.

I have 2 12W6's in my boat and the boxes are ported... Definately had to turn the gain down. I like the way ported boxes sound, but available space becomes a big factor. I am also running 1000/1 sub amp. I would think that if you have the room, go for it. It will maximize the output of your amp for sure...
