Default Where you putting your subs???

Hey guys I was into car audio when I was younger and haven't had a "system" in one of my vehicles for a while so not to familiar with doing up a boat except for our old mastercraft prostar 190. First thing is I just bought a 1998 shockwave 2500S open bow mid cuddy and it still has the four stock 6.5 speakers and stock head unit. I am just gonna upgrade it a little I don't need a crazy system but just want it sounding good. Wanted to know where you guys are putting your subs? First off I don't have an open area where your feet go so no sub in there and I have read that putting them under the rear bench is also not the best place so where else are you putting them? Was thinking a box underneath the driver and passenger seat but the seats but I have the offshore option where you can drop down the seat bottoms so not sure where I can put one or two subs. Here is what I just ordered for now.

Sony CDX-M60Ui (cdxm60ui) Marine CD, MP3, WMA Receiver with USB

    MB Quart NKE 116 (NKE116) 6.5" Marine/Boat 2-way Speakers

I also have a Zapco 4 channel amp that has been sitting in my closet for a while that I will use for the subs and a 4 channel alpine amp for the MB quarts. I also want to stay with one or two 10" subs. I just want a clean sounding not heart pounding setup with the amps and stuff I already have. So throw me some ideas guys, thanks.

Boat is in AZ so I won't be able to get better pics of the complete interior for another week or two until my daughter is born.

I would say under the driver and passanger seats ( my old boat was done this way). I have also seen a few boat with nice sub enclosures built underneath the back seat. You could also have something done in the side panels. If you don't mind lossing the mid cabin seating you can take the seats out and you will have pleanty for room, that's what I did. Also that way it is kind of protected from the elimintes also.

Here is a pic of what I did.

I would love to just mount boxes under the two seats but like I said I have the drop down seat bottoms so I can stand while driving the boat which I really like so if I put the boxes there I will lose that feature. I don't wanna remove any seats either to have room for speakers. I am not building a crazy nice setup like you have. Did those sub covers come with the subs? I like them alot.

I think your best bet then would be under the back set or in the side panels. Get ahold of SPL2K on here I have seen some really nice stuff he has done under the rear seat. No the sub covers didn't come with the speakers I bought them and sent them out and had them powder coated. Let me know if you want the info on them.

You could get a box, (I think Bank-Pass) with a amp mounted to the side and put it down in the cuddy area, Kinda as a step down in there, that would be plenty of bass, and quick and easy, not custom, but not expensive either.

Thanks for all the input guys I think since I am not gonna build a pounding expensive system that I will forgo putting them in the mid cabin area due to my wife is gonna be spending some time in there out of the sun with my newborn and wont even be able to listen to music without blowing their brains apart while in there. So even though its not a "great" place to put them I am probably just gonna go with putting them under the rear bench seat. I also like the drop out bottom offshore seats so thats a no go putting two boxes under the driver and passenger seat. My Zapco amp is only throwing out 180w X 2 in bridged mono mode so I am not pumping some major power into the subs anyways, just looking to have some better sounding tunes without losing space and using what I already have. Or the other option is to mount them in the side panel somewhere between the front and rear seats but I have to check for space back there first.

Regardless of where the subs are mounted, even under the rear seat base - the bass will still be loudest in the mid cabin.

You may want to do some research on those MB Quarts. MBQ sold out a few years ago and I heard they aren't near what they used to be. I still run a few sets of MBQ QM's in my boat, but when they need replacing will probably go with focal. The Zapco's have been and will probably always be good amps. There is a good forum for audio stuff at caraudioclassifieds.com, but keep in mind, its a much younger crowd. I will tell you what though, the cost of amazing audio has come down since our days. You can get awesome 4000 watt amp's for like $900-1000. For sub's and amps check out the brands of Audioque, FI and Sundown. I've heard many good things, but don't forget your batteries when you step up your system.

I'm about to install some subs into my boat, I didn't want to lose the storage under my rear seats and was wondering if I could install them inside the engine bay? I have a Cobra Performance Boats 270 Razor with lots of space around the engine, there are 2 side pockets where I was thinking I would mount them, one on each side, so they would be facing in.

Is this a good spot? I can add a port into the side that enters the cabin if I need to, just wasn't sure if there would be issues with the hatch being closed? Amp would be installed in the mid-cuddy or another open air area. I was planning on using an Alpine PDX amp and 2 12" marine subs.

There isn't anything behind the pockets? Usually the fuel tanks are there.

no, the 260 Razor has the fuel tanks down the sides, but the 270 Razor has one single fuel tank that is mounted down the centerline of the boat. I imagine that on the port side I would have to work around the fuel filler hose, but otherwise there isn't anything to contend with.

Then I would go for it! Figure out the sub's you would like to use, and check the depths, but it should get some nice acoustics echoing from under the hatch. You could even back it up with some mid's mounted below the hatch. There are some fiberglass guys selling enclosures on Ebay and other site. Not sure on quality....Haven't tried them yet, but am going to do this myself this winter.
