    Default SilverWing V-Drive

1987 SilverWing V-Drive. This immaculate, extremely well built light layup hull was originally put together for water ski racing in Southern California. This SilverWing has an interesting history; I am the fourth owner and have owned the boat for seven years. It is setup for recreational cruising and is really easy and fun to drive, especially if you are used to a stern drive. The boat has been meticulously maintained with the best parts and fluids available. It starts and idles in a very docile manner yet still able to easily exceed 80 mph. I think 100 mph is possible with minimal setup changes.

    SPECIFICATIONS:
    - Casale C-500 V-drive, 29% over gear
    - GM turbo 400 transmission
    - 468 inch big block built by BEP Performance, Orange California
    - Mooneyham 8-71 Supercharger with two Holly 1050 Dominator's
    - Don Zig Magneto
    - Braided hoses with AN fittings
    - Hard chromed prop and rudder
    - Menkins Prop is 11 ½ x 15 with 17 degrees of rake
    - Sea Strainer
    - Automatic Fire System
    - Gibson Mufflers
    - Depth gauge with alarm
    - GPS speedometer with telltale
It has a 7 1/2 to 1 compression ratio, oval port heads and makes an estimated 800 horsepower with 8-9 pounds of boost.
Trailer was redone about five years ago by VIP Trailers in Chandler Arizona.

The interior was replaced two years ago with a contemporary red, blue, grey and white custom designed interior. We based the design off current custom built boats but left in the hot rod look.

SilverWing is currently being built by Jim Wilkes at Wilkes Marine in Santa Ana, CA. He used to write the v-drive column for Hot Boat Magazine.

This boat makes Schiada V-drives look overpriced.

Contact Michael at 480-703-9339 with any questions or to arrange a showing.

    $35000

I will consider classic or hot rod trade.

Please go to Craigslist in Phoenix for many pictures SilverWing V-Drive

If it was built by Mitch and Jerry, it is probably a true statement. Could be the last one they rigged. I raced with Mitch, in the Jaguar tunnel days and if memory serves me right Mitch and Jerry got killed on the way to Walker Lake the last week of June in 1986. They were in Mitches camper truck, as I had the Silverwing service body truck in my shop. You need to search Silverwing boats, I bet Schiada Stan would agree that their boats were on par with a Schiada or even above. If it was rigged by Wilkes that is another story.

I actually like the boat a lot and I'm not saying it's not a nice boat nor worth the asking price but that is one bold statement and if you look hard enough and have the cash when they come up you can snatch up a schiada in the same condition for the same price or even less.

As I understand it, this one was in the mold when the owners crashed and died while towing to a race. It was number 5 of the V-drive race boats. Wilkes told me that he thinks it was originally owned by Dale Moen, but I don't think he rigged it.

If any of you guys have any more information about SilverWIng history, I would love to hear about it. For example, who were Mich and Jerry and what about their backrounds and boating history. How many boats were actually built...and so on.
