October 11th SF Fleet Week Run

For any of those interested in being on the SF Bay for Fleet Week and the Blue Angels airshow, I will be leaving Discovery Bay the morning of October 11th and heading to the Bay for the day. For those of you that haven't been there or done that, it's an incredible experience! There are sea and air displays going on from noon to 4:00 on that day and the weather and seas that time of year are usually boating friendly. There are public docks for those that want to dock and walk Fisherman's Wharf, or you can throw anchor and stay on your boat all day. The Coast Guard keeps a large area of the Bay clear for airshow safety measures, but there is plenty of room to still navigate your way around. If people are interested in going, I will set a meeting place and time to leave DB in the morning and a meeting place and time on the Bay to head back. I'm going regardless, so whoever wants to join up is more than welcome!

Sounds good guys, keep me posted. It seems like a long ways away right now, but it'll be here before you know it! I was out there on June 21st and it was an 'uncommonly' nice day for that time of year - it definetly gave me the itch to get back out there soon. I'll be heading back out for some day trips starting in September, but the Fleet Week trip is always the best!

Holy early-risers Batman, 8:00 A.M.? I was planning on leaving my dock at 10:00 and being in the Bay by 11:00. The air show is from 12:00 to 4:00 - with The Blue Angels flying last. Do you plan on anchoring somewhere or docking at the public docks? I usually just mill around the whole time, as the currents make it real tough to anchor and side tieing to eachother is impossible with the rough water on the Bay that day. Also, the Coast Guard is really strict on keeping the spectator fleet out of the fly-box area all day. Tell me what your plans are Steve!

I had planned on going and was going to launch in Alameda, but if you guys are running down I'd like to join up. What kind of distance are we talking?

How about we leave DB at 9:00, meet up with you guys at 9:30 in Antioch, stop at Benicia and top the tanks (it's going to be a long day!), and then grab brunch at The Nantucket in Crocket (great food!). It also has way better docking access than Sam's (especially during Fleet Week). Then, off to the City by Noon to watch all the airshow stuff. I've never had the water rough enough to slow me down too much in my 28s or my 30 during this time of year. On the way back, the water can get pretty sloppy though from all of the big boats leaving the Bay. I remember one year coming back in my first 28 and getting bounced around a lot - even down around 50 to 60 mph. Windchop/swell shouldn't be bad once we get out of the washing machine of the Bay (about past the San Rafael bridge). I'm going out to the Bay next Saturday (9/26), so I'll let you know how the water was then (unless you'd like to go with me then also?). I'm also making a run back out there on 10/24 if you'd like to go along then too. As far as going out the Gate to get some pics, that's just a given. I've never been in the Bay and not gone out under the Gate - even when I probably shouldn't have! Between big swells, wind chop, and or fog, it can get pretty hairy out there - I don't care how big a boat you're in! I honestly came close to flipping my 28 over backwards one time running headlong into big swell with a really strong headwind right outside the Gate. We were only doing about 50 mph - but that was enough to send the bow near vertical off a large swell at one point!!!
