Shut down is the most critical, just let it idle a bit!

No. I always let it idle to cool off before I shut down. Should be no different than any other component, you will have some oil retention and coverage. If you don't use a preoiler for your engine, why would you treat the turbo any different?

I used a preoiler for yrs and they are great. That set of turbos outlasted 3 engines.
The idea of an engine/turbo preoiler is a great idea for a boat that might set for a week at a time between uses. The one I used came with an adjustable timer that would allow it to come on for 20 sec when the key was first turned on and then had an adjustable off time which I had set for a couple min. It would maintain 20psi.
I have since removed it from the boat because it was an older design that was heavy/bulky and not a total necessity to have. I keep it in the shop and have it setup so I can put it on the boat anytime it sits for a little prelube and also for an oil change.
There is a new one out that doesnt weigh but 3lbs and when plumbed correctly could save youe engine in the event you are having some oil control problems. The way these are wired they come on any time your key is on and your oil pressure should drop below 50psi. This comes from aircraft technology.

With all of that being said, remember many many turbocharged vehicles on the road that dont have preoilers and they last a crazy amount of miles, but the use is entirely different.
