Default 427 bbc timing chain cover

can someone enlighten me on something? i'm in the process of changing out my stock timing chain cover for an old aluminum finned glenwood marine cover. my buddy said something about clearance between the cam and cover. something about cam movement. How does the cam know what cover is installed. also i have an external water pump so wont be using the cam driven one. just made a blankoff plate. thanks!

Should use a cam button are a retainer plate to keep it from walking.
