Pushrod advice

GM BLock, decked about .020 (if i remenber correctly)
AFR 305 heads
small base circle cam
Morel Hyd roller lifers
.039 head gasket

Using mid-lift, I'm coming up with 7.900 int, and 8.950 exh.

I'm not sure what wall thickness I need?? Options appear to be .080, and .120. Do I need .120 wall, or will the .080 be ok. This is just an N/A lake Boat... around 600hp, 5500rpm max.

I've never messed with Hyd roller lifters, are they that different than solid rollers in height??? With AFRs and Crower pressure oiled solid roller lifters, and Crower Enduro rockers, I had to extend them out to 8.800 and 9.450 to get things right at mid lift????? Is there that much difference??

You don't need .120" for a pump gas lake boat. You may want to try a set of Manton pushrods, they make a .095 wall for about the same price as others charge for .080 or .083", and will get them out to you in about a day, depending on what time you call.

The .080 should be fine for a hyd roller. The Scorpions are .120, the price is decent, and they pretty decend PRs.

The other choice is like Obnoxious says, Mantons .095 wall Series 3 (part #304 X length).

I use Smith Brothers, and for the HR I'd run the .120 wall. No reason not to (other than budget). You should have about 200# on the seat for spring pressure.
The Morel HR lifters are ~.800" taller than a standard solid roller lifter. I think the Scorpions are form Trend, but no telling what level quality. I've found some serious runout issues with "budget" pushrods.

I too use Smith Bros. Custom lengths no problem. Great service, but a little pricey compared to some of the junk, er, ah, stuff out there.... Engle used Smith Bros for all their rev kit stuff, and those pushrods have grooves cut in them for spring retainers/keepers.... Oh, and their 3/8ths push rods have been bulletproof with solid roller seat pressures. 20+ years and no pushrod issues, ever......

PS we did have to change a couple when the ball ends galled, but that wasn't the pushrods fault...

When I spoke with the people at Manton, my mind was made up. Got the .120 wall for less then what the .080 cost of some other brands. Great people.

And I'll have them in 2 days..

Let me tell you the kind if people they are at Manton. Its 4:00 PM Tuesday before Thanksgiving 4-5 years ago. I realize out of the 10-12 sets of PRs in the shop, none of them are going to work, and we have a race on Friday, and Thursday is a holiday. I call Manton and straight off ask her if she can get set of PRs out THAT DAY? She puts me on hold and comes back 5 minutes later and tells "I think so" I just told the guys not to leave, and the last FED EX pickup is at 5:00pm. They made the PRs, and I had them in HAVASU! at 9:00 AM the next day.

Think you would change PR companies after something like that?? Like I said, super people and customer service!!


I will miss Terry's presence there forever. He made the performance crowd sit up and take notice of the importance of PR column strength, and how much more important it is over weight.
