Hey Gn7. Gotta Question

Bob I'm switching my 540 over to synthetic oil and was at Wal mart getting it and was looking for 15-50 but they didn't have it at all. So I called my buddy and ask him about 10-40.. The only Mobil 1 10-40 they had was labeled "High Mileage".. Is there any difference in a High Mileage vs just a regular full sync 10-40???

And why in the Hell is oil so much cheaper at Walmart vs a parts store????

The 15-50 has a much better HTHS rating than the 10-40.

I don't think you will find the 15-50 at a retail store. We buy it through our oil distributor.

At my local Oreilly's Mobil 1 is $8.75 a qt and $32 for a 5 qt jug @ Walmart it's $6.50 a qt and $26 a jug. WTF??? But I haven't seen the 15-50 by the jug. I'm running 10-40 in it now and great oil pressure, just wondering what goin to Synthetic is gonna do

High temp high shear rating....oils with high HTHS remain "thicker" at 150 degrees C (I think that's the temp they test it at), while lower HTHS oils will be very thin...regardless of the weight designation on the bottle. With a boat, where oil temps and loads are high, you want a high HTHS oil. The best I've found is Total Quartz Racing 15w-50. It's the stuff approved by the euros for rally cars. Available online, or I used to get it through SSF. Its a true synthetic, not a hydro cracked group 3 base oil that most "synthetic" actually are. Neo is also good shit.

The 15-50 is showing up in both auto parts retailers as well as Walmart. But for some reason it seems very limited. Like TN ran into, not enough. Selected Walmarts are suppose to start carrying it in the 5 quart containers this summer as well. My understanding is that Walmart will soon be THEE place to find 15/50.

There is only 1 Mobil 1 10/40 and thats it. There other choice if your can handle a VERY slightly lower viscosity is 0/40.
Shy away from the 5/40 Diesel ESP. Its a great oil, just not for a extended RPM boat engine.

The Mobil 10/40 HTHS is as good OR BETTER than any other 10/40 you will find on the shelf at Walmart or Pep Boys. It WWAAAAAAAY past the requirements of both the API and ILSAC.

So are you saying the motorcycle 10/40 is the same as the high mileage 10/40 he's referring to?

NO!!!!!
The High Milage stuff isn't designed to handle the shearing, or the hi load metal to metal unpressurized contact of a motorcycle transmission, not to mention high temperature stability, and a few other things a MC does to torture a motor oil. If that kind of thing is important to you

Dddddaannnggg....it was a simple question. Some racer guy told me that 10/40 mc oil was teh shizzle to run...and you just said M1 only has one 10/40. I was cornfuzed.

Here's what I noticed:

First off I am a huge fan of Petroleum based oil (high quality like Torco) for a few reasons. With that said, I had a conversation with with Chris Straub about oils a while back. He told me about an oil test run with a dyno mule BBC. 600 CI or something close. I believe it was conducted for the military. Run at WOT for some extended period of time. The oil with the best results, least wear, was Mobil 1.

I have had amazing results with Torco TR1. I switched to Mobil 1 15-50 (because of the clearances I set the engines up with) in my engines just to see.... Oil psi is WAY more consistent and MUCH less prone to pressure variations related to oil temp, and I run this boat hard for long periods. I have not disassembled the engines since switching, (knock on wood), so I don't have any wear information to share. However, my instincts are that it will be good.
