No timing marks?

Ok boys it's time to flog the dumb ass. LOL

I have a 496 internally balanced that's fixin to get an 871 on it. And of course there are no instructions with it. The blower hub has no timing marks on it, and I was assuming that it doesn't get a balancer on it. How do you set the timing on this thing? Set the #1 at tdc and make a mark and stick a pointer to it? I saw a flex plate or fly wheel a while back that had the timing marks on it but I cant locate where it came from. Any help making it easy to time this thing would be appreciated.

I assume you are using a 6 bolt crank hub for the blower pulley. I perfer to use a damper, but there are many that think its unecessary. What ever.

You can buy a degree wheel that goes between the hub and what ever pulleys you are running. It is not numbered because its a universal deal. Its only degree marking. Once you determine where TDC is on it, you can mark it to line up with what ever pointer you are useing.

If the engine's already assembled, you can use a degree wheel and a piston stop to determine absolute TDC. From there you can use a number of options to determine the number of degrees you wish to mark but a good pointer on TDC is essential to begin.

Take both rockers on #1 off and use a piston stop that screws into the #1 plug hole. Make a pointer and permanently mount it . Turn the engine over by hand all the way till the piston touches the stop and using a marker , make a mark were the pointer lines up with the blower hub, then turn the engine in the opposite direction till once again the piston hits the stop, make another mark on the hub. Now TDC is exactly half way between those two marks. Make a permanent mark on the hub there. Dont forget to remove the stop and reinstall the rockers. Hass

Man that was quick Thanks GN 7 and doc will get a degree wheal ordered.

Hass, I still have 1 head off an by luck its on #1 side I can still use a dial indicator to locate TDC. Had to send one head back to summit cause the intake bolt holes were all screwed up (threads were pulled in several holes) Just got replacement head back from the machine shop today so finally moving forward again.

Well if you have a timing light from the current century you wont need anything but a tdc mark. Let me guess, you still have one of those with the spring that goes between the plug wire & the cap so you can tee into it?

You can and it'll work. I still think putting a stop on it is more accurate, easy to make one that will work with the head off.

You believe a stop is more accurate that a dial indicator measure .050 before and after and using that as a "in between"? And you make comments about my timing light? Talk about a stone age method!!!!

Yes I still use a straight up T light. See WAAAAAAAAAY to many "advancing" lights off. There are more than a couple straight up timing lights that have no business being used on a performance engine.

But anything that electronically "delays" the flash, no thank you.

Ok Donny don't mean to thread jack but my question goes along your topic.

When running the valves do y'all do them in the firing order or just do it one side then walk around and do the other?

Got in a pissin match at a race over this. I'll tell ya how I do it after y'all answer.

Actually I use the stop with a large degree wheel, and its accurate enough for me. I do have a degreed ATI balancer on my stuff.
With the Mag I use one of these cheap azz things and believe it or not they work very well.

exh begins to open set the intake, intake opens and begins to close set the exh. One cylinder at a time , I just bump it with the starter. Never failed me yet.

For standard firing order. One rotation of the crank and your done.
