What causes this?

I have a question for the class and the professor... He said it was out of an "offshore" boat but that rusty spot looks like fresh water rust damage, not the severe metal deterioration normally associated with salt water..... Could it be from leaving the engine outside in the rain? If the rings and SRP forged piston look OK, I doubt there was salt water sitting in that cylinder.... Salt on aluminum isn't a fair fight, and the aluminum is usually the big loser...... So, don't condemn the exhaust just yet, look for rust traces in the intake runner of the head and intake manifold....
