Hi guys a newbi here as far as posting but have been lurking around for awhile. You all seem pretty versed on the goings ons with motors as am I to a point. The issue I had this weekend did not invlolve my boat but my motorhome. I figured you all are up on your big block chevy stuff on this site so I would post it up on here and see what you guys thought.
I left friday night in the coach all was well for about 70 miles when all of a sudden at a stoplight I hurd a loud ticking, pulled away from the stop all felt good, continued down the road and the ticking seemed to get a little louder so I pulled over to give it a listen and came to the conclution that it was a valve ticking and i would check it out after I got to the camp site. Three miles later I had exsaust coming back through the carb like the valve wasn't opening, had to park it. I pulled the vavle cover off to find a broken rocker arm. A hole the size of the vavle stem in the number five exsaust valve. Dam lucky it didn't drop the valve as it was pushing down on the retainer. I put a new rocker on it drove it home on sunday with just a miss at idle and under power it seems fine. I have not looked into it any farther.
Do you guys have any ideas of what could have caused the rocker arm to wear like that and what I should be looking for? Any help would be great.
The coach is a 1990 chevy chassis with a 454 but it is not the origanal engine and the heads look like they have been done recently. that is the only info I know on the engine other than it did run great before this but it dose make a bottom end noise around 3000 to 4000 rpm. it has made that since I bought it two years ago, not sure what it is. And it hasn't blowen up yet. Any help would be great.
Thanks guys,
Paul
