Milodon kills another one
A broken Milodon pickup kills another engine. Good news is it is not mine. Bad news is I still have to fix it. I hope to have some pictures of the carnage tonight. My buddy called me and said it was a broken pickup. I said Milodon I bet. He asked how I knew. I said I'm a genius. LOL

ok you guys have scared the crap out of me with milodon pans!!! I have a new milodon in the box never used,, now i have no idea what to do with it? my question is which pan is good for just a ski boat?, I might get on it a few times or more, but which pan?, canton/ dooley, or hamburger? I looked up canton and i found the 18-310 for 2-peice rear seal, forward pick up ? $448.80,,, the dooley was $500.00 from rex, and hamburger from summit was like $299.00 or something so which pan ? and not to mention the price is friggin insane!!!!!! I used to use a regular oil pan, but then again I didnt know what i WAS DOING SOOOOOO YAAA THE MILODON I PICKED UP WAS ABOUT 299.00 BUT THAT WAS YEARS AGO AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS INSANE!!1

PIcs??? Just curious as to where it broke at? I've been running a milodon pan with a custom pickup since 1990 with zero problems.I literally don't have ANY oil pressure problems as reported, I don't race, But I drive my boat like I STOLE it! It's probably due to the OIL I run! LOL
The pans are fine. It is the pickups that have issues.

I lost a motor in my daytona v drive. the milodon pan and pickup was good. but the stands that brace the pickup were broke off the tube so it was just a matter of time. I never lost oil pressure. does the tube break off on these or what fails,

Shop where i worked long time ago had a concrete pad out back and a hoist. Every weekend i scrubbed it down with a broom and cheap dish soap and rinsed it off into the dirt. 10 feet away was a chainlink fence. Cherry tomatoes grew their every year wild. The plants went nuts every year, best tomatoes i've ever had by the bag full.
My deal has a milidum...it's kinda old, pickup bolts to factory windage tray stand offs, seems plenty stout. I check it every time motor is apart, which has been a little to often latelyNever had any oil pressure issues.....but it is in a hydro and everybody knows they don't turn...unless you haul ass and hammer it hard

Like Wags and others have said, the pans are ok, it's the pick up's, especially the older ones like in the pics that make the Milodon pans dangerous.
I used Dooley's back in the 70's and early 80's when I raced and never had any problems so my experience tells me what I need and want to do.
In my mind the most important thing you can do with ANY pan is ..... ALWAYS after every WOT run NEVER EVER (can't stress that enough) get your foot back in the throttle until your oil pressure has come back up, NOT 'coming back up' ... but has gotten ALL the way back up and has stabilized.
That said I will add this, whatever the guys who run circle boats are doing sure seems to be working. Think about this, they haul ass down a straight away, let off the gas sending the oil away from the pick up then try to push the gas peddle through the front of the boat again .... and they do that lap after lap ..... They've got it figured out

That p/u looks nothing but scary to me...as far as chopping throttle
and loosing oil pressure i thought that was what trap doors were for...but then what do i know, i used to run an olds in a v-drive with a jet pan/pickup and it always had good oil pressure when i chop throttle.
Although after looking it appears as though my deal does not have a milidon pickup. It looks same as this one

Here you go boys. Had this pickup been welded with a tig and silicon bronze rod this would not have happened.

That one has that scary thing going on. If that one had been welded at the pump would the bkt. still have broke? If the bracket had broke how long would the pipe have lasted with no support?
On my deal the mount bkt.is so short it can't wobble enough to crack and not welded into the pump...was that way when i got it..checked it with a magnifying and did not see any signs of cracks...and thinking that because of cast iron being stiff and pickup tube being thin if it did did flex much it would just break it at the edge of the weld. Pump and pickup slides into place with no load. I locktited the pickup tube into the pump. Pan and pickup are both kinda old...i was thinking they if it lasted this long....How long did that setup last? I can't remember..how does ford do it on their front sump/rear pump motors...i do remember that an old/loose one knocked several times on cold start
Not saying i know anything...just asking...
Bum deal on that motor..I had a Z28 years ago...i noticed the oil pressure bouncing around quit a bit..(gauge and 'damage indicator light)it was a little low on oil..i added a qt. (a little over full) and it seemed to solve the problem.
A month or so later i was blazing down the 91 at 3am @ twice light speed..by the time oil light came on the car was already slowing down....I guess the pickup had been off for a while...it didn't bother spinning bearings...it welded them to the crank and block....all of them.

Not being insulting or negative towards any posts but it sure seems the problems with the Milodon pan has a reputation for not working in a V-Drive boat or Hydro or for that matter any boat that has the engine setting backwards in the application? So my question is would the long pick-up tube be the problem with a bolt on pick-up and maybe not so much the diameter of the pick-up diameter itself?? For that matter it would be good to hear from guys that run that pan and pick-up in a jet boat without the long tube to the other end. Mark
