Evac or puke tank
What's up fellas? I took the boat out the other day to Elsinore and it ran great, I only had one problem. While I was running it seeing how it handled and ran, I looked back at the motor and the transom area looked like a crime scene. I had some oil coming out of the breathers, splattered everywhere. My question is, should I run header evacs or a puke tank? It's a mild 454 so nothing too crazy

...put a breather on the tank...use 5/8" or 3/4" hose...if your not hung up on the bling...you can make a tank out of 4" pvc pipe! & fittings...easy peezy

I think he was only trying to be environmentally good. I agree that you shouldn't spray oil into the water. HOWEVER, why is a mild 454 blowing enough oil out of the breathers to cover the transom??? Either the breather is directly over the push rod, or the rings aren't sealed, or both. it wasn't a huge mess but it was just a little drip every once in a while being blown to the back of the boat. but from what im hearing i may just go with the header evac's.

I agree, there is a reason OIL is exiting the breather. Either terrible baffeling and or breather location in the valve cover, or severe blowby. But like BD posted, it needs to be addressed, not covered with a band-aid or a puke take.

try a new, different, or better breather. A mild 454 should not have filled the breathers enough to cause them to drip.
My old style M/T valve covers has the breather right over the rocker > shooting oil right into the twist-on breather.
Stud Girdle eliminated any oil out the breather...just my two cents.

i know the driver side breather sits right above a rocker.. hopefully that is why i was getting oil coming out. i'll check the other side when i wash it tomorrow. thanks for that!

Not counting the fact that the rockers and springs love it because the oil now drips off the girdle and onto the rocker trunnion instead of shooting over the top of them.

I wouldn't give 1 cent for that opinion. evacs make hp puke tanks don't. and they work a whole lot better. this is a no brainer.i "personally" would run a puke tank...evacs are fine,but, your putting a mist of oil along with the water mist from the headers into the water!
