Has anybody used or is anybody familiar with White Performance and Machine?? They are in Kingsport, TN. I am interested in their 496 BBC rotating assembly(ebay item #190589821419). Seems to be a fair price. Any constructive input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. This is the eBay description:.070 oversize pistons +18cc Dome Probe forged pistons and pins with locks, 4.320 bore, Hastings moly rings, King rod and main bearings, 4340- 6.385 H- beam rods, Balanced 4.250 inch stroke Scat or Eagle crankshaft, Note: Includes flexplate and balancer

You know the saying, "If it looks too good to be true it probably is"?

Eagle or Scat 4340 cranks go for around $700 alone. Bob was right, they never state it's a 4340 crank. The price is too low, there almost has to be something going on there. FYI,, 4.320" bore yields 498.3 cubic inches with the 4.25" stroke, not 496 cu in. I have never tried King bearings, I know they cost a bunch less than Clevite, and the damper they have pictured is not one I would run in a boat. I don't think there is a brand name with the rods, so probably have to assume the worst on them.

As I said, call them and get all the information you can.

I would love to know the difference between Skip White Performance and White Performance and Machine. Both from the same town, both selling the same EXACT kit for the same price. Father and son?

Heard better things about Skip White, and some not so good things about WP&M. Who knows.
Maybe Cstraub can shed some light. I think he knows the story between the 2.

BTW, FYI, ONLY the crank is Scat and its a cast crank. The rings are eh, the bearings are middle of the road King bearing, labeled by Ling to sound like a good bearing but in reality the same as the clevite/speed pro "P" bearing, and NOT recommended for extended high RPM.
The damper is from a company "called" Pro Race, and they make great dampers, but the one in the kit is what they market as a Pro Street, and it IS NOT SFI approved. Neither is the flexplate, although they say "it the very same plate as the one that is" Oh really. Then pu the damn sticker on the freek'n thing!!!!

The rings are OEM moly rings, no file fit.
And the pistons are Probe, and I will leave it at that. They have discussed on here before, and personally, I'd take Icons over them ANYDAY!

The rods ARE NOT SCAT RODS!!!!! My guess, considering the volume both SKP and WP&M do with ProCrap, they are ProCrap rods, or Galaxy, or..... But they ARE NOT SCAT!!!

Skip White offers Scats "I" beam as an UPGRADE so what does that tell you about the standard issue "H" beam rod. BTW, the H beam rod has a 8740 bolt, but the name of the manufacture is NOT mentioned. The Scat "I" beam upgrade comes with a ARP 8740 bolts, and it is named.

When looking at these kits, NEVER assume ANYTHING. They deliberately write them in a way that makes the kit seem much more than it is.

For a few dollars more, you can put together a much better kit on your own. just my 2 cents

If the kit as is works for you, then the price is pretty good. But if its not the kit you thought it was, think about either getting them to up grade the kit to your needs, or look somewhere else. That kit was put together to do exactly what it did. Get your attention., and possibly fool you into thinking its a better kit than it is.

edit: seems to be some concern that I am trying to talk the OP out of the kit. far from it. Just pointing out a few things that the ad is written to make the kit seem more than it is. ITS THEIR JOB. ITS HOW THEY MAKE MONEY! BUT if the kit is in your budget and you believe it will perform to your goals, by all means buy it.

Thank you all for the knowledge and expertise. I want to make a well informed decision before I purchase anything. When I get a chance to call them, I will get all the details and actual parts(maybe part #s would be helpful) and let you know what I find out. Thanks again and let me know if you think of anything else:)

The rods and crank are precision engine parts. The kit does not come with damper or flex plate, but its in the picture. Waste of money. I sold my kit. Big waste of money.
I "upgraded" to the forged crank, only to find out they took away the eagle rods and gave procomp rods in their place .no arp bolts.I spent 200.00 extra to "upgrade" to srp procomp pistons-otherwise you get street car pistons with 5/16 rings.Flexplate and balancer were an additional 120.00 This raised the price to 1995.00....I returned my kit after my engine builder basically told me I had f-ed up. Took a 500.00 hit for restocking fees.Yes-too good to be true. All this after being told "don't do it!" by people on this site ...I wish I would have listened. Live and learn!

White Performance and Machine began as White's Machine Service, on J.C. White's property, in Erwin, TN in 1970. In 1979 White's Machine Service moved to nearby Kingsport, TN & later became White Performance & Machine. Today, 51 years later, we are WhitePerformance.com with champion drag racer, Fred White. My Dad, Fred White, is the engine builder. Aside from his racing wins, he has a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from E.T.S.U. (my cousin is Skip White, who moved from Texas to Kingsport in 2003 & began selling parts online)
