Who is the best custom camshaft builder for jet boat applications?

Not taking away anything from other suppliers, but I use Bullet Cams. I'm no cam designer, but I usually have a pretty good idea what I'm looking for in my combos. The guys at Bullet are willing to work with me to come up with cams that works pretty well both in terms of power and longevity.
So what are you working on Tim? Seems the 572 in your Daytona ran pretty good. IIRC, Joey built your motor and I'd rank him up there with the best of the best... Not many guys have their own Spintron and build their own valve train parts...

I use Chris Straub. I don't even question it. I look at the cam card, think hmmm.... and put it in. Our boat runs great with a .650 lift Straub cam.

the best cam grinder I have ever met( and i have built a few engines) Is Donny Johanson who was the grinder for the late Chet Herbert. Between him and Chet designed the VERY first roller cam. Donny has built me many cams blower app and so on. I don't know if he is still here but he knows and has many profiles for any app you may need. He helped me with just how to set up valve train and springs as far as tension and spring pressure. Last I heard he was moving to Utah to retire but knowing him I doubt it. If you would like to get in touch with him P.M. me and I will give you the last number I have for him. He is one of those guys that hand you a cam and springs and says ru them. The last cam he ground for me was for a tunnel ram 454 and would spin 6k in a heart beat. The Last blower went 7k but the pump was done but the cam was not! Mark

Another Straub Cam here...still working on getting some full pulls on the engine, so I can't say how it is going to run, but his reputation for building cams around the engine combo is solid. His customer service was stellar. Took me a lot longer to get than an off the shelf part, but Chris always picked up the phone and would answer whatever dumb question popped into my mind that day. His prices are competitive as well. Nothing but good things to say about Scott & Chris.

btw...they also keep picking up the phone or answering my posts AFTER the sale.

How much gain has been realized from one performance cam to the next on the dyno with a turbocharged engine ?
I had this discussion with another of the turbo boaters on here and we both had drawn the same conclusion.

I've always used Bullet Cams and have no complaints.
The one I run now is .630 lift as compared to what I started with that was a .735 lift.

I like Bob M. @ Marine Kinetics. Great guy , answers phone, very knowledgeable .. usually loses me about 10 minutes into out conversation :wink2:

EDIT: 3/2/15 ... F*%$k Bob , he`s a pompous ass who`s never owned a boat, much less built a motor or rigged anything in his life , more like a kitchen table engine builder. I`ll be contacting Cstraub on the next build.

Last build was a 522ci. AFR heads.. 10-71 little field.

As an example I have attached my dyno sheet. I have a CStraub cam. What the dyno sheet doesn't show is the motor has 2 1050 dominators and a 10-71 Littlefield and 355 Dart heads. I'm very happy with his cam.

well i guess then it pretty much does't matter! thanks for showing me this. i would have thought they would have figured it out somehow. i guess it must be an impossibility of sorts the way they have to do the crank. i guess the 7/4, 2/3 swap would be a rare weird cam grind only if somehow the motor was running lean on one particular side. i did have trouble this last time but i did not blow the gasket between 5&7 again! i have a pin hole in 4 . does not look like a crack. so the 7/4 swap seems to have solved the 5/7 blown gasket problem. thanks again & for the record i did ask if they made a cam that had no 2 cyl. firing one right after another & the answer i got was that its rare but they make the 7/4,2/3 swap cam. i assumed by the question that 2 cylinders would not be firing side by side.. again thanks for the diagram!!!

The late model LS firing order puts the load on the crank to the rear where oiling is best. For early model BBC blocks. Late model blocks have upgraded oiling.
