Valve Adjustment Chart

If you want to make sure you are on the base circle when adjusting the lash on a radical cam with lots of lift and duration, and your application has the same firing order as a Chevy ( 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 ) , a handy little stick on chart is available.

It is actually made my Mopar, but available through Jegs as part # 312-P4452989, for the low low price of $ 4.99. Pretty much self-explanitory, and with a careful trim job you can do away with the Mopar logo.

Well I can tell you this, the sequence worked well for setting the lash on my 540 powered Lumina, with a 286-294 @ .050, .807 .765 on a 114 LSA. Although that would probably be a girly cam compared to what Pro Stockers run, so take it for what it's worth.

That baby is stout...what do you rev her to ?

Mines not that big but I can set it off the base circle or off TDC and there is no change in lash adjustment and I'm damn glad because I need to keep it as simple as possible.

Most pros use the intake rocks (all the way open and just starts moving shut), set exhaust,
exhaust starts to move (open), set intake

This works on every 4 stroke engine, regardless of make, firing order, etc.

Look at a cam and it will make sense. remember, lobes for one cylinder are not next to each other, (on the cam), there is a lobe for the opposing banks cylinder in the middle
Try it once and you will see, no chart to lose, nothing to remember.

Thats the shit, My balancer has the 90 degree marks on it, makes for easy lash adjustments.

I sold the car to a guy in San Diego two years ago, but when I ran it, it would pull strong past 8K. All out it would go 8.30's @ 167, in Super Gas 9.90 @ 150, in Super Comp 8.90 @ 160, both the class racing times were with a throttle stop working off a timer.

DAVID 519 and I know each other from our car racing days, he had a real clean 70 something Camaro.

So, One time I'm explaining this to a kid who was acting all "Know It All" an chit. Says he likes the balancer marking method because you don't have to take off the valve covers to watch the valves move. SAY WHAT! HOW THE FOCK DO YOU ADJUST VALVES WITH THE VALVE COVERS ON?

Valve Adjustment Procedure - The Quick and Accurate Way:

First, view this little chart below for Small and Big Block Chevy Engines that I made and see if you can understand it. There is more of an explanation below the chart. For other engines you will use the firing order that matches your engine to create a similar chart. This chart is based upon "opposite" cylinders of your firing order. (see below)

Intake Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

- - with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
  - with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
  - with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
  - with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
  - with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
  - with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
  - with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
  - with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve

Exhaust Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

You will notice that this is the same procedure and sequence as the intake valves listed above. Only now you are adjusting ONLY the exhaust valves the same way.

- - with #1 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Exhaust Valve
  - with #8 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Exhaust Valve
  - with #4 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Exhaust Valve
  - with #3 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Exhaust Valve
  - with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
