    Default Need more power!

I am looking for any ways to bump up the power in my 509. It is a merlin II with merlin heads (iron 320cc). It has a 5140 kellogg crank and 200cc tall dome srp pistons. I have a victor jr 454-r intake and a pos 850 marine carb. I know that if I bump up to a diff carb and get rid of the water in the headers I can pick up some. I am turning my alum b/c impeller to 5600 rpms and I want to turn it to 6300-6500. Short of swapping pistons and heads what can be done to reach that goal?? Any help would be appreciated.

Where does the engine make power? A b/c @ 5600? Sounds like your at about 350/400 hp to me.

Assuming you want to stay with pump gas (sounds like you're @ 10:1+) Solid roller, good valve train and a Dart or Edelbrock Vic. and a 1050. What's your exhaust?

Yeah I am really disappointed with it. A 509 should have more than that with the stuff that went into it. Not quite sure where it makes the power. It was built with a t/r and nitrous so I am assuming it should make its power at a higher rpm than it turns now.

Good thought. This motor was built to have a tunnel ram and nitrous but i don't want the problems of a tunnel ram and not sure if I want to go to nitrous. I would like to be all motor.

I am already running av gas not the crap from the pumps around here. I already has a solid roller cam, clay smith c-318. O/T bassetts. I don't want to go any higher on the compression but I may have to to get what I want out of this motor. I am not exactly sure but I should be able to get at least 600 out of it without that much work, Right? I am around 400hp as it sits. My 468 had about 550hp, I don't get it, less ci more hp??? WTF??? I wish I had my old 468 in this boat!!!

I was thinking an 1150 but if a 1050 should it be a dominator or square bore? Im thinking 4500 but a 4150 is more affordable.

You have a completely mis matched combination of parts, it sounds like. You need to decide what your goal is and reverse design the engine from where it is. Your combination as is should make plenty of power, so I'm guessing right off the bat you have the wrong cam. Might make sure of things like timing and that the carb's opening all the way, but I would think you've done that by now.

Dyno time. With a few pulls you can pick up significant hp.

He had me at Clay Smith

Is the cam degreed in ? Do you have a blower cam in a N/A engine ? As Scott has stated over and over combination , combination you need someone like him to sort that thing out. A 1,050 would be just fine for it once your get to that point but you have a way to go before you need to worring about the carb.

George Streagle is a sharp guy, and knows jet boats, but that doesn't mean he chose or recommended the cam. "Built for a TR with nitrous" makes me think that now that it has a single four on it, it's a morphodite, and nothing is matched. The basic parts combination seems OK...the cam is what brings it all together. (I know you know that sleeper...)
