    Default Oiling Question HELP

Oiling Question Posting for a friend.
Fresh motor has oil pressure at the gauge 40 psi when cranking the motor over, but no oil is getting up into the heads, what could be the problem.
    Thanks
    Gen VI 454 AFR 305's

Problem could be that no one spun (primed) the oil pump for a while before he received the motor. Get a oil pump primer w/collar and spin it with a drill until the oil comes out of the pushrods/rocker arms. Could take a while. If it never happens doing this then a plug could have been left out of the block.

What block is it, what year, what diameter cam shaft, what heads and what size (diameter) lifters?

If your friend's block is a Gen 6 block,, like yours, NOT using the remote cooler lines from the block, then it's good to remove the pressure bypass that is in the block directly above the threaded oil filter adapter, since it diverts the flow to the passage in the block rather than allowing oil from the filter to return directly to the block.

There are different types of oil priming tools, if it's a plain one with nothing to simulate the distributor being in place, then it won't prime the top end, so it may take several moments of the engine running to bring oil to the top end.

Even if all the plugs are in, and you use the right priming tool, it is still possible to not get oil to the top if your lifters are edge orfice type. You can spin it for days and never see a drop in the heads.

Noticed that you edited your original post to include: "Gen VI 454 AFR 305's".

Given that, that answers most of my questions except lifter manufacturer, type & lifter bore size.

Does any oil show at 8 & 6, or no oil at all?

If no oil shows anywhere and your friend used Fel-Pro head gaskets ..... that may be a significant contributor as Fel-Pro's do not align with AFR 305's and could be blocking oil flow.

Another thing to consider is that your dealing with GM's 'Priority Oiling System' that definately does not work with very tight/small lifter wall to lifter bore clearances.

Can you please explain how a head gasket keeps oil from going to the head of a BBC?

Only if the lifter is an edge orfice lifter. Has very little effect on hyd and and standard solids with the oil hole in the band area.
