    Default twin turbos

Hass 828,you are the man ,thanks for posting the diagrams.i already see a couple things that i had wrong like i thought hot water went through the carb base.i am already getting slack from the race car locals about baby blowers and no fuel injection.but hey i will take em for a ride and then see how they feel.thanks again hope to have her done by april or so

    Default banks set up

thanks for the replys.i am collecting a lot of info and will change a few things.i noticed this was set up for the water to go thru the carb mount instead of oil .maybe it was better since the t shield had hotter water to warm the mount floor

hass had his using water thru it too, but i think he eventually bypassed it all together.i think they expect these kits to be used during the winter or something, only reason you'd need a heated carb mount box that i can see, summertime the fuel evaps well nuff on its own before injesting into the turbs.

tomply32, I just bought a complete Gale Banks twin turbo system as well. Turbos are a new territory for me. I don't mean to hijack your thread but rather hopefully shed some light onto what you might have (or might not have) just purchased yourself.

In my case, the system uses the Rayjay turbos, and they are in fine shape (a turbo rebuilding friend of mine looked them over). These Rayjays also have the cast-iron water jacketed exhaust housings. Here is what you might want to look at with your turbo housings on your Banks system:

Looking up into the turbo from the exhaust flange (which bolts to the transom log/header flange), you can see where the exiting exhaust is sent through the turbine vanes (red arrow). But, there is also a bypass port (blue arrow) which diverts exhaust from the turbines and sends a major portion of the exhaust straight to the exhaust pipes! My guess is that this is a built-in "governor" which acts like a pre-set waste gate and keeps boost down (due to the day cruiser application of these turbo systems). You might want to see if your housings have this feature.

Hass828, how much boost can be gained by tapping an NPT thread into that bypass hole and plugging the bypass altogether? On a 0.030" overbored big block, for example, might this increase boost from say, 6 psi to perhaps 10 psi or more? Or would waste gates be mandatory if I plugged that bypass port completely? What about drilling, say, a 0.250" hole into the newly installed bypass plug so as to limit the amount of exhaust that is bypassed (regulate boost that way)?

    Thanks,

    LO

    Default gale banks turbo

you are right the holes were for limiting boost not really pre bov but i think more user friendly.your intercooler as far as i know would be either pfm(performance first marine)or gale banks.the cores i dont have a clue i have seen two types one with small piping(could be homemade)and one with what looks like a heater core, thats what i have .i am not looking for max horsepower out of the rajays.you would want to go with turbonetics.either way you are limited with a draw thru carb setup.but hey whats wrong with 850 h.p. thats what the original gale banks stage 3 was rated at.i am working now on getting the motor that my set up came off of.it is a gale banks preped offshore motor just gone through hope i get it .what are you putting your in? hass is the guy to talk too

Lakes if you block the bypasses you will need to install wastegates or you will overspeed those small turbos and they will eventually come apart. You can adjut the hole size and probably turn the boost up to 15 or so but be careful on pump gas at some point just past there it will detonate.

My old RaceAero setup on a 460 CI BBC, Performer RPM heads and a small SR cam made 13lbs (5400 rpm on a AA) with the holes in the exhaust housing completly open, i then blocked them off to about a 1/4" and boost went up to 18lbs (5900 rpm). My guess was about 750-800hp @ 18lbs. I was going to put the setup on a BBF and i mocked it up with some addapters from C. Evans and it was going to work out pretty good but i decided to go another direction. Like Hass said, its real easy to over spin those little turbos and they will start to puke oil and destroy the center section. Doing it agian i wouldn't go over about 10lbs boost on a BB, i personaly toasted a few RayJays on that deal.
