twin turbos

Hass 828,you are the man ,thanks for posting the diagrams.i already see a couple things that i had wrong like i thought hot water went through the carb base.i am already getting slack from the race car locals about baby blowers and no fuel injection.but hey i will take em for a ride and then see how they feel.thanks again hope to have her done by april or so

banks set up

thanks for the replys.i am collecting a lot of info and will change a few things.i noticed this was set up for the water to go thru the carb mount instead of oil .maybe it was better since the t shield had hotter water to warm the mount floor

hass had his using water thru it too, but i think he eventually bypassed it all together.i think they expect these kits to be used during the winter or something, only reason you'd need a heated carb mount box that i can see, summertime the fuel evaps well nuff on its own before injesting into the turbs.

tomply32, I just bought a complete Gale Banks twin turbo system as well. Turbos are a new territory for me. I don't mean to hijack your thread but rather hopefully shed some light onto what you might have (or might not have) just purchased yourself.

In my case, the system uses the Rayjay turbos, and they are in fine shape (a turbo rebuilding friend of mine looked them over). These Rayjays also have the cast-iron water jacketed exhaust housings. Here is what you might want to look at with your turbo housings on your Banks system:

Looking up into the turbo from the exhaust flange (which bolts to the transom log/header flange), you can see where the exiting exhaust is sent through the turbine vanes (red arrow). But, there is also a bypass port (blue arrow) which diverts exhaust from the turbines and sends a major portion of the exhaust straight to the exhaust pipes! My guess is that this is a built-in "governor" which acts like a pre-set waste gate and keeps boost down (due to the day cruiser application of these turbo systems). You might want to see if your housings have this feature.

Hass828, how much boost can be gained by tapping an NPT thread into that bypass hole and plugging the bypass altogether? On a 0.030" overbored big block, for example, might this increase boost from say, 6 psi to perhaps 10 psi or more? Or would waste gates be mandatory if I plugged that bypass port completely? What about drilling, say, a 0.250" hole into the newly installed bypass plug so as to limit the amount of exhaust that is bypassed (regulate boost that way)?

Thanks,

LO

Lakes if you block the bypasses you will need to install wastegates or you will overspeed those small turbos and they will eventually come apart. You can adjut the hole size and probably turn the boost up to 15 or so but be careful on pump gas at some point just past there it will detonate.

gale banks turbo

you are right the holes were for limiting boost not really pre bov but i think more user friendly.your intercooler as far as i know would be either pfm(performance first marine)or gale banks.the cores i dont have a clue i have seen two types one with small piping(could be homemade)and one with what looks like a heater core, thats what i have .i am not looking for max horsepower out of the rajays.you would want to go with turbonetics.either way you are limited with a draw thru carb setup.but hey whats wrong with 850 h.p. thats what the original gale banks stage 3 was rated at.i am working now on getting the motor that my set up came off of.it is a gale banks preped offshore motor just gone through hope i get it .what are you putting your in? hass is the guy to talk too

The intercooler cores were made by Harrison Radiator, a division of GM since 1916 and later Delphi to the present day. The part # is # 8533329. I have a pair still in good shape. They were made of cupranickle. The bypass holes can be plugged and then you will need to control boost with wastegates. I think I have a pair of non drilled housings somewhere. The turbos are probably capable of 20#+ so boost control is a must. The cores measure 33/16 x 37/8 x813/16. The mounting flange measures 43/4 x 57/8. Pics will be added when it gets brighter outside.

Wow, thanks for all the detailed replies, everyone. It sounds like I should probably pull the exhaust housings from the turbo assemblies, tap the bypass port but leave it completey open/unplugged, then see how much boost registers with the system as it is and decide later if I should plug the holes/install plugs with smaller bypass holes, etc.

I understand that in the interest of longevity and reliability the smallish Rayjays shouldn't be spun too high, and yes, an 800-850 hp engine combo is all I was shooting for with this system....which I intend to use for a learning platform before the a later TT build down the road.

steveo, I might be talking to you later about the intercooler cores/info.

Thanks,

LO

I turned the boost up to 25psi once and had a turbo come apart bad enough that the turbin went out of the exhaust pipe and knocked a hole in the pipe on the way out. Sounded like a bullet ricochet'd off the engine. I wouldnt have wanted to have been in the way of it when it came out of there. Could hurt someone in a bad way.

most of the Rayjays that were drilled were to make 15# boost max. I will be taking one of these intercooler cores to a guy that has a shop next to Superdave's and see if he can get them made. It is what he specializes in. Also taking a Lee intercooler.

There is another type of core that as you said look like tubes. That is what I have in side mine. Not really sure on the dimensions...and REALLY not sure what I will do when they shit the bed :)

I tapped the holes in my little turbos but haven't messed with the dimensions. I am running a 468 with bowtie aluminum heads, an 850 boost referenced Holly and making about 10-12lbs. That is about all I am comfortable running on this set up. One of the turbos does leak some oil but the shaft play seems fine.

I do use the heater box, and I will tell you, even in the summers (granted, I live in MA) I get some ice on the outside of my carb spacer.

I think the bypass holes in my original housings from Race Arrow were 5/8" and that was to get to 15# to produce 850hp on a 454 BBC with a single Holley 850. I changed them to regular housings after a few months and added wastegates. Big difference.

Wow 15 psi with a 0.625" bypass port. Pretty safe to say that boring a 0.250" or even a 0.375" hole through an NPT plug is thinking way too small. By the way I'm measuing ~0.700" +/- dia bypass ports on my housings, hoping to tap them for a 3/4" NPT plug....even if I never plug them.

Make a spacer block between manifold and turbo, attach wastegate and dump tube. I used wastegates from Turbonetics, still have a pair. I will get a pic later if it ever stops raining here!

full throttle i am surprised to see you installed supertrapps .i had them on my flattie 20 years ago when they first came out they didnt work for me .i think they came with 12 disks cant remember went all the way up to i think 12 disks a side.then they went in the can.do they work for you or is the sound police on you like they were on me at the time.
