blower piston coating technoligy

quick questions,how do you engine guys feel about the polymer,antifriction,coatings applyed to performance piston skirts ? any one have any bad stories with them? or good stories, what sorces are out there ?will use them in a 500+procharged mag/mpi if i go with this, any ideas what 8 pistons would cost to apply this type coatings

Just call JE and order them coated.

It's been a couple of years or so since I had a set done, but it cost about $20 per piston, including a heat barrier on the tops if I recall. I have not personally used Embee, but you may want to check into it with them. One of my customers is currently having his exhausts and other parts done there based on my referral, and I understand they do pistons as well.

Here is what I can tell you about coated pistons/ coatings. I coat the demo derby stuff (I know... let me hear it). These ass clowns don't think twice about spending 7 to 9k on a derby engine. I had a customer whos engine got so hot it burned the oil of course, the center cam bearings were so HOT it MELTED the babbit off them. No shit. The engine died because the babbit went into the main oil galley from the cam bearing to the main journal. Cloged the hole, and killed it.
Pistons, fine. Skirts, fine. Underside of pistons showed a little heat. They could have been reused.

Oh, moral to the story. It is a HUGE insurance policy. Probably will make some hp due to keeping some heat in th engine instead of the river. Or torque, or whatever. ROFL

after coating would the bore need to be a little bigger than what it would have been before the coating? it seems like the coating would add something to the piston.
Embee Jeff goes by Tiki on here contact him he knows all this stuff.

1) Dome is coated. Well, whole top. It is a ceramic based or whatever. It keeps heat in the chamber and out of the oil for all practical purposes.
2) Skirt coating starts under the oil ring down. Above the oil ring piston dimesnsions are decreased. The job of that part of the piston is to support rings. Not provide a bearing surface for the pistons.
3) Machine pistons? Open up? (open up depends on application)

IMO don't adjust your clearance because of coating. You can adjust it because of application. If your coater is puting the shit on so thick they say to adjust.. find a different coater.
