Default Dyno Question: Break-in oil ???

    Realy stupid question .......but .....

For the life of me I can't remember what I've done in the past...........

20 minute dyno run-in/break-in do you guys drop the oil or just check the filter and add a quart?

For the life of me I can't remember what we've done in the past, but I think we've dropped the oil after 20 minutes.

After buying 12 qrts of Kendell 20-50 at the current price the thought just hit me about dropping $ 50. worth of oil, re-filling it to make 10-12 power pulls, then dropping oil to run synthetic for a few pulls. Damn that starts adding up $$$$$.

On a fresh motor I run the motor at 2500 rpm and above thru a few light pulls, checking the basic jetting and timing, and run a few heat cycles under light loads during the day, then cut the filter apart and check all the dry sump hose return screens

Then retorque the heads and reset the valves recheck the timing

Before making full pulls at max rpm, then dump the oil while hot and a replace the filter again

Then were ready to swap different set ups ie exhaust, carb spacers, manifolds, cam timing to get the best results

Yep. Filter only. And I have even forgone that, but I live dangerously. Check after its off the dyno But the same oil thru the entire dyno session. Now on a flat tappet deal, I would want that oil out if at all possible, but the filter for sure. But then I haven't built one of those in 15 years.

break in, make a short pull to check torque numbers and if all looks as it should then I stop, dump oil, check filter, switch to whatever oil i'm going to run from that point on, and the start testing tuneups and parts.

Default So get this....... Oil Filter

So it was in the back of my mind to get a "quailty" oil filter the other day when I was getting the final stuff together. Some of you may recall I've been a fan of System One oil filters....after a few threads on here about them being more of a "screen" than a filter I decide to try something different. Where I purchased the oil they didn't have the Jomar, K&N or Moroso filter but they did have the Wix Racing filters that are so highly spoken of. So I purchase a Wix 51515R filter. ......to night I decide to see if they make that same "racing" filter in a long ...over-size. I go looking for it on-line and I find out that the Wix racing filter has a micron rating of 61 WTF ........ My Sytem One filters are 30 microns and flow more oil. The Wix does flow 28 gpm.................. well hell my Kaase oil pump oil flows 12 gpm anyway I'd rather have the Micron rating below 30 microns

Looks like I'll be ordering those Jomar filters after all.

Btw..... thanks for the info above on the break-in oil.

Put it in the boat and run it wide open. If it lives its a keeper.

So I decide to run Kendall 30 wt for the break-in oil. I go to a local parts store and they want $65 for the oil. I ask the guy " Are you sure that's the price?" He shows me the pricing ...I tell him I'll be back. I go to a little stand-alone local parts store and walkout the door with a case for $ 49.00... I wonder if the local Wal-Mart carries it in 1 gallon jugs? I like buying from the little stores though, I'd rather give them my business.

Yep! Break it in during warmup. Run the hell out of all weekend. If its still alive on Sunday afternoon, then it has earned an oil change

Since I dumped my System 1 filter and switched to a Baldwin my bearings have never looked so good.

You can pick up Baldwin filters at local truck supply stores and they are pretty cheap. I've been buying BT292 filters for 6 bucks a pop and they filter down to something like 22 microns.

Thanks Mike .....I'll check them out. The Jomars are down to 20 Microns but cost a bit more.
