I want to use MLS head gaskets but want to make sure I use the right ones. Any help?

Bob, are you sure it's a Gen 5 block, not a Gen 6?

MK IV style heads are not recommended for Gen 5 blocks, the Gen 6 had revisions to make them more compatible with the MK IV and aftermarket heads.

To my knowledge there are no BBC MLS gaskets that cannot be used with aftermarket heads. The only issue with the Gen 5 and 6 is the heads themselves covering the top water ports, which the brodix is fine, and the gasket cannot have BOTH openings on the ends. See pic

composition gasket with two openings on the ends. No good for Gen5 and 6

MLS type with only one hole on each end. If there are 2 holes on the ends, the water will short circuit and return thru the front of the head and out the manifold. I have never seen a MLS type gasket that didn't look like this.

Also you can go here and read page 2, it explains it pretty well.

Cometic makes a headgasket, not sure about Felpro. (Edit in: MLS style)

The last Felpro MLS gaskets I bought were almost exact duplicates of the cometic The Felpro's use to have a sticky sealant on them, now, same as the Cometic. If I dont look for the name on them, I can't tell the difference. The rivets are in a slightly different place.
None of the felpros or Cometics have the two open holes on the end, only the lower hole is open, and either will work on a MKIV or GEN 5&6 with the correct heads.

Barry, he's talking about Brodix heads. After market heads aren't a problem on GEN 5&6 blocks. Nobody makes a "Gen 5" head except GM. Using Brodix heads on a Gen5 with the right gasket is not a problem.

I'd agree with you, but then we would both be wrong

I had read the Brodix part, but had thought there was a difference in the size of the water passsages in the Gen 5 that made them difficult to seal properly, and thought part of the reason for quickly changing to Gen 6 blocks was to allow easier use of aftermarket heads.

I guess the main thing is to check any part carefully when assembling to make sure fit and function is correct.
