I have a 540 BBC tall deck with a 14-71 also and I have had very good luck with the Fel-Pro blue gasket.

NO. The MLS are black and rougly twice the money. You don't need anymore than this unless you running a compression above 9 to 1 and race gas.
This gasket can hold anything running on pump gas so long as you don't throw it into detonation.

I have had nothing but good luck with Cometic! That's what I'm currently running on my 565 with a 1471....6lbs on pump and 11 lbs on good fuel. I think that head studs and proper torque (after heat cycling) is more important than the brand of head gasket.
