    Default Building a 496 and looking for input!

    I am in the process of building another 496 BBC. This build will be a 13+:1 comp. with SRP pistons Eagle rods and Callies crank! Using Edelbrock Victor 2-R intake with 4150 Holleys. This is for a jet application and I am looking to build good power to 6800-7000! My question is what heads have some of you used to get the most HP and TQ out of this combo? I do want the HP and TQ to go hand in hand and TQ not to fall off like rock down a well shaft! Any replys welcome! Thanks!

    He is good but, I am looking for guys that have built in this power range that have had success with their builds! I want to know what heads they used, valve size, flow numbers (maybe)! Just to give me a heads up before I buy my heads! Then the heads will pick the cam!

    Hey WT...Get a set of AFR 345 or a set of Dart 355's, then go to Comp Cams catalogue, find the solid roller page for BB Chev's, go to the bottom of the page and pick the second from the last cam.

    Are you working with some existing parts or is this a new build? If you're starting new, with the availablity of parts these days, there's no compelling reason to go with a small motor. I'd look at something in the 598-632 range. Pretty easy to build decent HP with a mild cam on these bigger motors. Something to consider....

    I have not built many 496's. The last one I used AFR 315 or 325 heads. 225 intake 188 exhaust with CNC'ed chambers. It was a pump gas deal with 10.3 c/r. Cam was, to the best of my memory, in the 780 lift area with duration in the 315 range and 110 center. Dyno'ed a little over 850 @ 7100.

    I think you maybe thinking of a 632 build not a 496! So you are saying go BIG or GO HOME!

    These are existing parts and the only new parts will be heads and cam! I just built a 555 last season and was going to make this motor a beater! (AKA Beat the hell out of it) And pump a pertty good shot of NOS on top of that!

    This is more to the info I am looking for! Just actual builds that produced good results! Do you remember the TQ numbers or close? Thanks guys!

    Seems like 825ish on torque at 5100-5200. I was shooting for a bit more but I did the heads. Steel would have got a lot more I am sure.

    That wasn't bad for what you were using for compression! And that would be a rocket if it would have made all that power by say 6800 RPM! JMO

    335 AFR HEADS CNC PORTED( i won't use the SRP Pistons though )
