While the forums area of the site is still standard HTML, many of you have probably noticed that there are other areas to the site that are not.
I have been watching the logs very closely during launch and I see that we have had a few people time out their communications to the server. I think it would be good to take a moment to discuss that.
The performanceboats.com site was written in Flex. Flex is similar to Flash in nature and runs on the flash player. Flex is in fact made by the same company that makes Flash.
Unlike a traditional website, when a request is made to the server you do not change pages. Instead a very small amount of data is exchanged with the server very quickly and your new results are shown (videos, pics, whatever).
Typically this data exchange happens in the 200 to 300 millisecond range, however sometimes on a slower internet connection, or one that is prone to noise and errors the call will take longer or fail. When that happens you will get an error message telling you that a time out has occurred.
Usually all you will have to do is click OK and you will not see the problem again. The website will automatically retry the connection and will adaptively set your timeout periods to a higher level for next time.
We are always working to improve this system, so any comments are appreciated. This method is very fast, and will only get faster as we continue to upgrade the site.
