Default A word about the technology behind this site

While the forums area of the site is still standard HTML, many of you have probably noticed that there are other areas to the site that are not.

I have been watching the logs very closely during launch and I see that we have had a few people time out their communications to the server. I think it would be good to take a moment to discuss that.

The performanceboats.com site was written in Flex. Flex is similar to Flash in nature and runs on the flash player. Flex is in fact made by the same company that makes Flash.

Unlike a traditional website, when a request is made to the server you do not change pages. Instead a very small amount of data is exchanged with the server very quickly and your new results are shown (videos, pics, whatever).

Typically this data exchange happens in the 200 to 300 millisecond range, however sometimes on a slower internet connection, or one that is prone to noise and errors the call will take longer or fail. When that happens you will get an error message telling you that a time out has occurred.

Usually all you will have to do is click OK and you will not see the problem again. The website will automatically retry the connection and will adaptively set your timeout periods to a higher level for next time.

We are always working to improve this system, so any comments are appreciated. This method is very fast, and will only get faster as we continue to upgrade the site.

We are doing very well in the server size and bandwidth department. I typically get 1300k/sec (1.3mb/sec) downstream from the server when I am DLing big files.

The server is a clustered server, so it is really not one server, but many all working together to spread out the load. If one gets overwhelmed the others just pickup the slack. Very nice setup.

Any software or speed requirments to get the site to load.
I am able to access the site on my work computer, but my home computer does not load the site.

My home computer says done (bottom, left hand side), but nothings is dispaying. Any idea, I would like to access the site at home when I have more time to play.

I was experiencing the same behavior when clicking on the forums link that was in the header of the home page. Had to click on it twice to get it to display. Probably a Flash thing. Now that I have the forums bookmarked I don't even see the home page...

The site does require flash player version 9 to run. It is never a bad idea to upgrade your flash player as the later versions have some really nice features that will make the site (and others) run faster. Here is the link to the latest flash player.

My pop up blocker is off. When I try click on My Boat or any other tabbed button I get a window that opens for about three seconds amd a message that says my security settings won't allow the web page to use my installed Active X controls.

I have enabled all Active X controls under security and still getthe same message.

    Help Please!
