    Unhappy Chime Walk

I took the boat out yesterday and at about 70 miles per hour it starts to chime walk really bad. had to back off trim and could never get beyond 70. I have a bravo I with a 28 pitch lab finish prop in a Genesis 23 foot open bow. Could this be caused by the prop or is it hull problem. I have two 40 gal side tanks and one was empty and the other had about 10 gal in it. The boat was sitting pretty level in the water at rest. Thanks for any input John

    Default Chine Walking

    John,

This is so common among vee bottoms it's unreal. Different boats do it at different speeds. Chances are the major contributor to your issue is the hull design itself. Therefor, without changing the bottom, most guys will add trim tabs to help with this chine walking issue. It does help, but it scrubs speed and it is kind of a band-aid in my opinion. Also, If you do not have dual external steering rams at a minimum, you are encountering a lot of slop on the steering. This is a big problem in keeping the boat "tame" at speed. Yes weight distribution/ prop, water conditions and driver are also concerns. There are others, but these are the biggies. Overtrimming will make chine walking deadly so be careful.

I have the Imco single ram full hydraulic steering and small racing tabs but the tabs don't seem to help. I really don't want to get into changing the hull so if changing props or shortening drive wont help I guess I have a built in speed controller.

Just curious what you have in this boat for power. A few years back I had the Ultra version of this hull powered by a 496. This is a very light hull with a delta pad. Mine topped out in the very low 70's and I never had a problem with chine walk. I had Dana LT500's to keep the bow down in rough water.

Supercharged 383 running 7 psi boost 1:65 Bravo I drive 28 pitch lab finish Bravo I prop 0nly turning 4900 to 5000 at 70 mph on GPS Speedo This hull is actually the INXS hull which Mace Mcgruder leased to Genesis My hull number ends in 001f303 which was the first hull out in 2003

I was under the impression that the Genesis 23 came from the same mold as the Ultra 23XS, the Lightning 23XS, which originally came from Eliminator. My mistake.

Regardless it shoud run great with a SC 383.

    edit,

I just went on the Genesis web site. The red and gray flamed boat with the wake board tower on it looks to the boat the Eliminator and DCB called the 22 Extreme, and Ultra and Lightning called the 23 XS and Cobra calls the 23 Razor. Nice hull

I looked at one at the boat show and the sales guy told me it was not the same mold as mine but I really could not see any differance. The INXS was a wake boat with Volvo rigging thats why mine has twin 40 gal side tanks. Puts out a nice wake when tanks are full. Mace McGruder was only with Genesis in 2003 with his mold and I dont know what went on between Genesis and him but they are not real friendly to me when I try to talk to them about my boat. I bought the hull bare and rigged it myself.

Unfortunately, the only other major solutions I have would be very costly.

I would have to say the rpms seem a bit low for a 383. If you are "grunting" that motor/boat it will not like it. It would be much happier(if the motor/cam would take it) spinning a little more rpm with less pitch. There are also a lot of guys running the P5X from hydromotive with good results, although it does have quite a bit of bite and can be tough on drives if you over pitch the boat. Prop the boat to run light at the rpm the motor was designed to turn and you should be in the ballpark.

I just wanted to add: The actual term is "Chine" walk, refererring to the outside chines on a boat. Just FYI Just wondering, what kind of boat is that in the pic(the wrecked one).

One more thing: Chine walking is not some sort of instant event that takes place. It comes on with quite a bit of warning before you will pile it it up and go swimming. If anyone has a boat that chine walks badly, there is really no reason to stay on the gas and "drive through it". It's not like it's going to get better. The set up of the boat is wrong and needs to be corrected. There are some boats that just werent meant to be fast,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,period.

Is that the Schiada that crashed here in Havasu? If so, I hope you are doing better.

Yup thats me. I am doing better. Broke my legs but I am running a marathon in July so im alot better. ok so it didnt chine walk cuzz it happened in a split second. It is a 21 schiada RT. One trim tab did not come up because the line was crimped so with the combination of the sponson setup on the boat and that trim tab staying down it was an unrecoverable "Rocking" It threw the boat up on its side then the other side then it flipped all the way over. Everyone walked away with only bruises from the water except me. Now I am building a 1000hp motor for my new schiada but it probably wont see over 60mph for a long while!

Glad to hear your doing well. I remember the accident, and all the difficulties you have had physically and the related financial problems with you being out of work.
It was a RT right? What are you building up now?
