The "CFZ" HIN indicates "California Homemade". If this was built as a race-only hull, it would not have required a manufacturer's HIN number when laid-up. If an owner ever decided to register it for use and acquire registration numbers, the DMV would have issued the "CFZ" HIN. In this case it indicates that California DMV issued that number, apparently in 1997. For what it's worth this applies to all 50 states plus Washington D.C., Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The first two state ID letters followed by a "Z", indicate that the HIN was issued by that state for a hull that had no other ID number.
