View Full Version : Transom tip flap replacement?
I've got standard exhaust tips thru the transom with a flapper inside of them. The flapper has a pin going thru the center of it which looks like it presses into a brass bushing in the tip housing. I need to replace the flappers and cannot figure out how to get the flappers loose.
Do I use a drift/punch and just pound the pin out of the tip housing? I looked around in the tech sections and didn't see any How to for this. Advice is mucho appreciated!

Now that I look a little closer, it appears I only have a problem with one side. Should these be closed tight in the tip housing when the engine is off? I'm thinking no. The starboard side flap on both sides of the pin is not stuck to the tip housing and springs back to almost fully closed.
I'm replacing my stock Mercruiser exhaust soon with Imco Powerflows and I've already pulled the port side riser & S pipe off. When I pulled that side, 1/2 of the flapper was stuck inside the tip housing(almost sucked in backwards too far and now deformed). Not really melted to the tip housing, but on it's way to being so. On the other side of the pin, the flap was almost wide open. Seeing this, it seems like when running, I was probably only getting exhaust & water out of 1/2 the tip(the wide open side of the pin)???
So, do I need to remove the brass bushings in the tip housing, or do I pound out the pin going thru the flap? If the brass bushings have to come out first, how do I get them out?

No biggie they blow out all the time. You cant tap out the pin, its glued to the rubber flap. You have to take them off the boat to hammer new ones on anyways. So....Take a Dremel and buzz off one end..on the inside. DONE
Then set it on a work bench and hammer on the new one. Just be careful not to hit it too hard and bend or dent the pipe.
Save a few bucks and buy them from IMCO

Are you saying to buzz off the brass bushing or the pin going thru the flap?
If the pin is glued in place, it sounds like it might be best to remove the brass bushings from the tip housing.

If you have 4" dia tips, best fix I have found was to replace the stock type with the no burn type.
Eddie marine sells them. They need to have a pin welded in the tips
Eddie Marine will also install the flapper in the tips for you.
All you need to do is send them the tips.

If you dont care about how it looks, remove the metal flappers from inside the tips and clamp the rubber kind to the end of the tips. Quick and easy, (and cheap) Hopefully you have straight tips.

I believe Mercury requires the internal flaps and a secondary device (clamp on flappers) as far as warranty goes.

I had the samething and replaced them in the boat. If you have a little room around them for a c- clamp and a small cut off wheel its easy.:D

I'm not getting the C clamp part in the equation. What I really need to know is....do I remove the brass bushings on the outside of the tips so I can then remove the flap with the pin thru it? If so, how do I get the brass bushing out? Pull it out, cut it off?

Those style flaps are 2 generations ago for us (about 10 years +) and they burn off pretty easy.
They are brass bushings that are simply pressed onto the shaft that the butterfly flapper is molded around. Simply drive the pin out of the bushing with a small drift punch. Bushings will likely need replacement after disassembly.
I think I have some bushings laying around here and probably some new flaps left over from days gone by. If you need give me a shout and I will see if I have. If so no charge.
Note: Expect this type of butterfly flap to burn off again.
Since the butterfly flapper (which some mfg still use) we came out with the "no burn" flapper (widely copied and still sold by some) which had its share of problems and was noisy. For the past 5 years or so we use only our original designed Rex Superflapper™ (http://www.rexmar.com/page230.html) which is highly successful in solving all the burnout and noise issues of those earlier designs. Lifetime Guarantee. Easily replaceable. No more flapper issues. (Ironically no need to replace). Out of several thousands sold I can count on my fingers the number of Superflappers™ that have ever failed and needed replacing.
If you live near Azusa I'd be happy to help you out.

Thanks for the offer. However, I'm down in Anaheim Hills, so not too close.
Rexone, if the offer still stands, I'd like to take you up on it. Mine isn't actually burned, it's just deformed. I'll try to get a pic of it. It's probably 10 years old just like you said, most likely original to the boat.

Mine did not want to drive out. I took a cut off wheel and cut the top of the brass bushing off then cut the pin in half, they came right out.
Put the new flapper in place start the brass bushings in place the C-clamp is used as press, if it get's to tight then take a punch and tap the inside of the pipe and bushing, they will go right in.
Here are some pics of what I've got......
First pic is the "good" side, no burn, more or less closed.
Second pic is the "bad" side, crispy, stuck wide open on one side of the pin, & sucked in backwards on the other side of the pin.
Third pic is the bad flap removed from the tip housing. Removing it from the tip housing wasn't too difficult. The brass bushing was not that tight on the pin or in the tip housing. Worked the top brass bushing loose then pulled it out. Once the top was free, the bottom came out with a just a little persuasion.
I'm thinking I'll just replace both sides while I'm in there.
Rexone, how can I get in touch with you to get the flappers & bushings? I might need some other stuff for the boat at the same time.
