Black Smoke Part II

Speaking of black smoke, the CHP had a roadblock set up today in Huntington for diesel trucks, not semis.
Got flagged in, took the vin, the miles, hooked up to my computer, looked under the hood, looked at the exhaust, revved the motor to check for smoke and off I went.
Funny they didn't say anything about the AZ plates though.

how are they allowed to plug into my computer what if the idiot messes up my truck then what

I have an 08 Duramax and have added an AFE intake and a DPF back exhaust with the muffler delete. No change from the exhaust other than eliminating that ugly tailpipe.

Have not touched the computer, cat or DPF. Truck does not smoke at all. Would the intake and exhaust pass their inspection??

It passed inspection with the AFE and exhaust. Just a hint of black smoke.
Never heard of this before, but I guess the govt is now controlling more than I thought.

I thought the same thing when he revved it up past 3K RPM a few times.

Well you knew this was comming with all the punk ass kids with chips in that look for people with their windows down and spool up the diesel so the plums of black smoke
fill their car then they blast them with their train horn...

I had a kid try it while I was driving my wifes 57 t-bird, I made a right hand turn
and got away.. then turned back and followed him to the arco..

when he got out and headed to the store I grabbed him and said we need to call you dad
and let him know what your up to.. then I told him, you are lucky I don't just whip your ass...

He took a long look at me and said.." Could you just whip my ass, instead of call'n my dad!"

I almost busted out laughing right there!!!

I guess at 57 I'm not as Intimidating as I once was...LOL

Not being a Chippy, i'm not sure of their legal standing if you refuse.. i do know there is PC to inspect vehicles when it's determined they may be modified..IE for the import racer cars..and if you guys want i can pull up the CVC section. On that section, once you find one mod, the vehicle has to be sent to a smog referee for a complete inspection, including serial numbers etc. I'm not sure on this one here though. I have fried my PCM before, i would not like someone plugging into it...i may need to make some phone calls and get back to y'all on this.

My truck, 02 PSD, didn't even come with a cat..so i hope they're on their game if they say i hacked it off.

My buddy got writin a ticket for modified electrical, got pulled over for to low back in the 90's. The cop saw the Speakers in the shell... then let him have it.

i understand being alil strict on emmissions but that all just seems alil overboard. i'm a deisel tech and know what those chips and programmers are actually doin. if its black smoking, the muffler or exhaust filter on a dmax will clog fast and really jack some chit up.after all, these modern motors make so much power as it is, why dick with a safe tune up?

the only positive thing i see is that at least you can get a free notice from chp that your truck won't pass, and you can get it within boundaries when it does come time to take it in. Doesn't look like they are going to "sniff" the pipe, just visually check for black smoke, and visually check under hood, and the PCM for mods......

After seeing some of you guy's truck, y ou may want to just drop a v10 in to pass when it comes time to smog...might be cheaper LOL

I have the 08 dodge..never needed anymore power.. when towing it will just spin the tires if I gas it to much

Id ask for a warrant to touch my veichle. LOL

They can look at it all they want, but they're aren't touching it. I'll offer to smog it and come back in a few days with a report, but they aren't plugging anything in. Im sure if you were cool aout it and expressed your valid concern for them playing with your veichles PCM, they might work with you. CHP/Cops are usually pretty nice to people that are nice to them.

for now that may work, but it will happen in 2010 and 2011 to get your tags. I've heard nasty rumors that any exhaust mod will be an immediate fail as well...but i just don't see that happening. any smog guy shouldn't sweat a gas engine with flowmasters on it, so i dont' see that being a huge deal.

I think most of you are able to make your trucks compliant with a simple unplug of a chip and all, but i feel sorry for the people who changed injectors, etc. This state is amazing! (one container ship or forest fire dwarfs the amount of smog millions of cars puts out every year)

Luckily for me, i'm one of those idiots you guys with modded trucks pass when towing the fifth wheel, because my truck's stock and still pretty slow. I'll keep right...good luck to you all!!!

that may work, tell em noone but a gm certified tech is allowed to touch your truck otherwise it'll void warranty, and say that a gm tech told ya they can tell when an aftermarket scanner has been plugged in as well. if the scanner they're using isn't a gm tech2 scanner, its wrong
