Default A couple engine cooling questions

As a new jet boater, I fell victim to a blown engine. The previous owner had freshly rebuilt the Olds 455 in my boat and said not to touch the gate valve on the water line entering the engine. After being on the water for about 45 minutes, with no hard running of the engine, I made a half throttle launch and ended up with a busted piston and a rod ran through the cylinder wall. I've built a new engine and it hasn't seen water yet.

I have been doing some research on the water pressure issue and have found the article on Performance Jet to be the most logical solution:

Performance Jet -Jet Boat High Performance Design

Does anyone here run this setup? If so, does it work or do I need to look at some other options?

    Thanks!
1974 Taylor SJ - 455 Olds, .030" over, Basset O/T headers, Lunati cam, Holley 750 DP carb, Accel HEI Dist. fully restored interior w/Hardin gauges.

Hello Joel , Welcome to Jet boats and sorry that the beginning of this expirience for you yeilded problems , Although pretty basic, many have somewhat differing opinions on different types of "bypass" and jet boat engine cooling systems . Alot depends on you exaust set up Eg Headers (Over transon or thru Transom) , Waterlogs or Center rize manifolds, Also what jet and even where you run the boat (water and ambient temps) even more more information than you have provided would be helpfull Thanks Tom
