New to jet boats...I have a 1975 Glastron Carlson CV19ss with a 390hp Olds 455...

    Default +PICS ADDED+...I have a 1975 Glastron Carlson CV19ss with a 390hp Olds 455...

    ....Is there any way I can tell how many quarts of oil this beast should have? I recently purchased it from someone that had owned it for several years, but didn't know much about it. All he knew was that the intake manifold gasket was leaking. I have replaced the intake and the carb with Edelbrocks. Am changing the plugs and wires today. I want to change the oil, however need to know how much I should be running.

    If the engine is full of oil now, simply drain and measure it. and replace it
    Otherwise, it will depend on what type of oil pan it has.
    If it is stock, it will run 5 qrts.(corrected post)

    Default That's the problem...

    ...I have no idea if the boat currently has the correct amount of oil. Dipstick tube/dipstick are definitely incorrect and don't even go into the block. I am trying to locate a correct 455 dipstick tube/dipstick for the engine. Not an easy task in itself. Most I am finding don't fit the block properly. I guess I will try six quarts.

    I'd like to see a picture of the pan.... Then we'd have a better idea of what he is dealing with. ANY blind suggestions could be expensive..... Especially when you consider how "finicky" the Olds' oil systems are.....

    Default Tough to get any pics of the pan...

    I'm having trouble just finding the drain plug on it. I don't really want to pull the engine to do this.

    You can buy a oil/siphon pump and pump it out of the dipstick. I got mine from overtones for $75. Works great.

    Default Got my new dipstick and tube...

    Got it installed and shows I have full/clean oil. I will put her in the water this evening for a bit and get you some pics. Thanks for all of the help. Great forum!
