Do baffles affect power?

Years ago back when I was running on the lakes with a 500 HP BBC, I used cat food cans for baffles. Drilled a bunch of 1/4 in holes in they and bolted them in the collecters. Didn't seem to make it quieter in the boat, but the sound didn't travel far. At like 100 feet away, it wasn't loud at all. Even passed inspection. I didn't have any noticable rpm drop with them in. They would blow out in about half of a season so I made some out of heavier metal.
