Does the fact the engine is mounted in a boat the part that has you stumped? Take it out and put it in your truck and work on it.

seriously, stop racking your brain because its in a jet boat. Its just an engine whether its in a truck, Vette or boat. All the same.

OK, I am going to ask a really stupid question here, but bare with me. What were the old valve covers made of. aluminum? Cast? New ones. Cast aluminum, or stamped steel? what. Old and new.

no its not the fact that its in a boat that stumps me its the fact that i do not know a lot about diagnosing problems with engines that stumps me if i knew what was wrong i would have never asked the question the valve covers i took off were cheap stamped steel chrome covers and the ones i put on are cast aluminum

If its a BBC the covers will swap side to side. So make sure that they still not hitting. Just because you swapped them from side to side doesnt mean your OK. You may need another set of covers. Not all covers will work with all aftermarket valvetrains.
They also make spacers to space the covers up for clearance but they are expensive and look like ass imo.

Totally the opposite of what I would have guessed.

Now I am stumped. How does a valve cover know which side of the boat its on. What if you were to swap the heads, would you have to swap the covers too? My two covers are identicle, and I am never sure when I take them off which one is which. Never concerned myself with it either. Were they, or should they be marked Left/right out of the box?

    MMMMMMmmmmmmm, not sure?

ok, so that everyone doesnt think Big hoss is retarded lol, i talked to him last night. The aftermarket cast aluminum valve covers were cast way too thick. He saw scratches from stock rockers on the inside of the covers (hard to beleive i know) He ground out a couple millimeters of material, and as far as I know they are working fine, and nothing is touching.
