Setback Pump Question

I have a 1981 Crusader (southwind splash) Its 18ft long. 468 Chevy. I rebuilding the pump, doing a shoe, ride plate, droop, and diverter.


What are the advantages of setting back the pump on a 75-85mph river boat?

Is there any?

It won't hurt your performance any and it might help it. But if you add more hp later on, you'll be glad you did. Now is the time. Pat

Or, it could give you nothing but headaches because it will need more power to maximize the set back and it won't perform for crap until you get more power......

if it aint broke don't fix it. Alot of people do the set back with low power and all of the sudden the boat develops a porpose and then they can't seem to put enough hardware to it to fix the problem.

Just playing devils advocate here. I personally dont see the need for a shoe and ride plate on a low HP deal that only runs in the 70's anyway.Now in the 80's i say do it.

Not saying don't do it, just be prepared to play with it alot if it doesnt do what you think it will.

Thanks for the info Tim. The boat has somewhere around 550hp and runs 75.4 on gps with me and my chick in it. The thrust bearing went bad so i pulled it out. Im getting the shoe and ride plate installed plus parts for $120. And I was asked why I dont just set it back also. Your brother is helping me rebuild it.

1) I dont want to do all that work.
2) I dont wanna do it if I need more power. Its not in the budget.

So should I leave it alone and just do the shoe, ride plate, droop and diverter? I wanna see 80's out of it with no power upgrades and I was told that is easy to do.

Set Back provides several bonus features. #1 It allows you to dry out the running surface thus decreasing the wetted surface- + MPH when set up right.
It puts the thrust further back a great feature and makes the hull think its larger.

It also provides you with quick change to Impeller and Bowl without re-caulk A ++

I would just do one thing at a time. rebuild the pump,r/p shoe and droop and perfect that set up first. just my opinion here. The whole setback deal works great to, but are you looking dor every mph possiable, or do you just want a nice reliable boat with no headaches? Even the rideplate and shoe with out the setback is going to be a bonus. you can try alot of different shoe / loader combos to get the boat to do alot of different things. I would save the setback deal for the future.

I will give you a clue if you do. Leave the Motor set alone unless you dump big power into it. I did it by making a 4 1/2" filler block then just reset the pump back by cut out and worked bottom. Its great except I moved the motor back same and picked up a porpose. Will move motor back to original location as I changed balance to much the other way. 21 Eliminator Day 460. Great River Boat.

well then you come out and do the glasswork and reset the intake.. I am helping Sean out and not charging him but fuck that if I am doing all that for free...... plus i think he want to be back on the water soon..
