air cleaner change ?s

so currently i have the thing in the pic. its lame and has 2 pieces of metal sceen mesh on the backside and nothing else, hardly a filter.

i wanted a scoop and small filter inside untilll i saw pricing.

i saw this and it seems to look and function well.

why would you want a filter on it? not like your stirring up alot of dust on the lake

You're not stirring up a lot of dust on the concrete interstate (not like the 2.5 miles it takes me to get to pavement), why run one on your car?

There is the exact same dust, in the air over a lake or river, as there is over the shore next to the same body of water.

I run a K&N filter (14"er). After several years, it IS QUITE GREY/BLACK, all around, and not from "towing dust" since I run a hood/engine cover and very little "road dust" gets under my hood, let alone to the carb.

This is the same dust that went past the "flame arrestor", into the engine for 26 years before (dad bought Lowrider in 1978, showroom new, gave to me 2003).
My flame arrestor was $100, USCG legal (hooded engine again, "enclosed". K&N is a valid "flame arrestor", due to the metal screening. The USCG tops and bottoms, are stainless, not spun aluminum (the "off-road" cheapies).

No, nothing "missing".

Those stock flame arrestors are pretty restrictive, the small K&N unit will likely flow more air (slightly), a bigger one would do better.
I've never personally been a big "velocity stack" guy, but, they work OK with a filter on them. Without one, they actually can HURT since air flow over the front edge (from fwd motion) can be very disruptive to flow down the stack. Turbulence.

I just cleaned my carbs...majority of the air bleads were plugged with gnats.

If it's close to a stock motor that's fine but if you are moving some air you might want this one.The air cleaner is 5" tall.

anything has got to be better then whats on there.

the motor sheet was 450hp/450 ft-lbs

good info so far, new to boats but not motors. i want a filter on there.

I'm running a K&N, 4" in an oval flanged assy. Covered engine with 2", removed pad insert and added the 4". It got dirty before and after.

Well I run an air filter on my car because all of the road dirt that the other cars in front of me are kicking up and the occasional dirt road i get on. when I ride my harley for a mile or two on the frewway I can feel the dirt on my face and wipe it off with a white towell and see it. When I ride in my boat across the lake and back I dont have any problems with dirt on my face so the way I see is there isnt much dirt out there over the water. I dont know maybe it has something to do with the lake ? and I always tow the boat with the intake scoop covered. Just seems like an added cost for nothing. I can understand in a covered motor or a scoop where flame arrestor is needed to be CG aproved

I run filters on everything I own or will ever own. Can't afford building my engine over again any time soon from a stray grain of sand or who knows what is flying around that river/lake air. I used to live in Needles, you couldn't imagine the amount of silt in the air out there.

Ive also been thinking about getting a K&N cleaner for my set up.. The issue i have is the scoop i run . I was told that i was SOL putting a filter on while using that scoop...

My thought process being that a K&N should flow either as good or better than the USCG FA and also filter any particulate matter out of the air.. Better to have and not need then need and not have.

Little crooked in the pic but you get the idea...
