Does any one know if this name has been used or is in current use? Also how do you pick a boat number? really wan't to stay away from names and numbers that have a past out of respect. Thank Scott King

Jack Haze from San Angelo, Texas had a BFJ named 'Purple Haze".
not unusual to see old names resurface on another boat.
as far as a number, make a list of a handful you like, then call the club you're going to race with to see if they are available.
How would I get ahould of him to ask permission to use his boat name? Tradidtion and respect are pretty importantto me Thanks Scott
It's really hard to come up with a good boat name that hasn't been used already. I'd say, as long as an active competitor isn't using it in you're association, you should be good to go. There are a few names like Madness and The Texan that I wouldn't use even though the competitors that made the names famous are not racing at the present.
In asphalt drag racing, the use of car names has mostly been abandoned except in the nostalgia deal. Seems boats are heading the same way these days.
Thanks guys I have not heard of a blown fuel jet named purple haze, maybe it has been retired. Thanks for the replies guys. Purple haze it is then. I will find out thru SDBA what numbers have not been used and go with that. Scott
Theres a pretty well known silverwing that has been in the magazines name "purple haze"!
i "had" a name on my boat long long ago which happened to be the same as a board member!...he no longer has that name (chnged board name)...i may put it back on...i find NO dis-respect for a prior name... if you like it...use it
...just sayin' my .02 cents

I would stay away from Purple Haze. Back in the early 80's a guy named "Purple Jack" Bennett had a southwind tunnel that was known to be on fire more and got a bad rap for that. It was a Top Fuel Jet that ran wrecking yard 392 Chryslers. It was always entertaining but never really a front runner.
You might start on the boat number thing by going here...

and scroll through the pages to see if the boat number you want has been used.
Kenda Reedy, the SDBA Registrar has a list of numbers that have been retired in the SDBA for various reasons.
