Check the cable, mine did that last summer.

As whipped565 mentioned checking the cable with the mercury tool is an easy thing to do.
Second I have found over the years that sometimes the gear oil gets hot on the top gear set and can create carbon. This carbon can create enough resistance to slow down the movement of the clutch.
You can take the rear cover off the drive and inspect the clutch assembly.
You won't see the complete gear set but it will give you an idea
