Hugh James suggested I ask you for advice.Redoing the stringers and floor on this v-drive. It is supposedly from the 60's era. Under the shaft log I found 4 inch fiber bearing encased in a "blob" of white marine-tex surrounding the propshaft. Opinions vary as to whether it is needed. One is that the prop shaft is 68 1/2 inches long does not need to be there. The other is it replaces a whip strut. Really want to "Get her wet" soon. Can you advise best decision.

LARRY: In my opinion the bearing support does not need to be there. I would much rather use a whip strut and delete any leaking issues if any. That system sound like a pour man’s fix for a whip strut.
Some guys don’t like whip strut's but on most pleasure boat’s I find then to work quite well.

And guess what I’m in the office today and not testing boats at the lake New Mexico Bullet. LUCKY ME.
