i def like the idea of it not being attached, have you ever tried to find touchup paint? i went to pep boys and bought the brightest white i could find and its still alittle to grey, any idea what the color is? i hate the fact they use black primer so when you get a stone chip it sticks out like a sore thumb, why not prime using white or tint primer too match the finished color i'll never understand

    Mike at Nordic says...

the gap is designed to permit the fender to flex.

    Thanks!

I had kind of given up hope on getting responses to that post. A foam pad would be about the right thickness. That's interesting. Has anyone else seen a setup like that?

I talked to a guy at a local lumber yard and he suggested treated yellow pine. I think trailer bunk material is a thread akin to an oil thread!

I'm planning on replacing the bunks with treated yellow pine and SS hardware.

I'm also replacing the plywood sides but when I got to looking at it closely somethings about the fenders don't make sense. Look at how low the fenders are in regard to the hull of the boat. It looks stock ie. no modifications. It's tough to see but the support under the center of the fender is not attached to the fender. It seems to be just a platform support in case the the center of the fender flexes. Does that sound right?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
after reading this i went downstairs to look at my trailer, same exact setup, not sure what you mean about the fenders but mine look the same way, i've also been told not to use treated 2x6 for bunks because of the chemicals in the wood, i've always used standard 2x6's and used a black waterproofer on them to make them last alittle longer, and as far as i can tell you are right about the fender support, mine is up tight to the fender but it seams to have a foam pad between fender and support, have you ever blown out a tire? looks like the bracket is bent alittle, thats actually a good setup because on my eagle trailer the supports were welded to the fender and i had a tire failure and when it blew it wrapped around the support, bending it down and taking the center of the fender with it, keep me updated on that bow cover!
