    Default new bike i built

As many people here, i also subscribe to the "its better to build it then buy it mentality". Just something about envisioning a project in your head, building it mentally thousands of times over before you even start collecting parts that just consumes countless hours of my days.

So, I decided I needed a new dirt bike, long story short they dont make any big bore 2 strokes anymore in modern a modern chassis. So I made one.

    Its a 2002 KX250 and swapped in a 2000 KX500 engine. Its a blast and everything i've ever wanted in a bike.

Was built frame off and took about 3 months total.

suspension by precesion concepts racing (thanks bob bell)
swing arm and rear engine boring by wsuwrhr (thanks for everything)
frame mods by vintagespeed and myself (thanks for the use of your welder)
    engine mods by myself
    pipe and silencer by PowerPros

and yes, she absolutely gets with the program...

Hey right on bud, I always wonder what happens to some of the projects I work on, this was one of them.

If I had enough ass to kick it over I would love to ride it.

Probably a kick in the pants.

    Bike looks good.

    I like the pipe.

yea it came out great. Totally am happy with it. Rode it every weekend in Dec, Jan and most Feb pretty much. Been house hunting like a maniac lately though.

I do appreciate your help on it!

You are more then welcome to beat it up whenever. We mostly ride at either El Mirage (well actually 5 mi east), Johnson Valley, or Barstow.

That's a sharp bike, looks awesome. How much improvement in handling is there over a stock framed KX500?

After years of wanting one, I finally bought myself a mint KX500 this winter. I took it out in the snow last weekend and plan to do the same again this weekend. Your statement about no longer being able to purchase a new big bore two stroke isn't entirely correct though... just need to get into oddball brands (or Service Honda as I am sure you are familiar with). Maico and ATK are making some huge power with their 620 and 685cc bikes. The fellow I bought my KX from has one on order.

No dyno time, I doubt i'd do it. Would be kinda cool to know for sure, but unless I really strike it rich, I have too many bigger fish to fry. I can tell you my butt dyno says its quick, too quick.

Growing up around 2 strokes all my life, i always wanted a hand made pipe and thought they were quite possibly the most bad ass thing i've ever seen. Now I have one =)

Yea, There is a VERY solid improvement across the board. That KX500 frame is 80's technology and way outdated. Its like going from dual outboard shocks to a mono shock. The new bike is lighter, tighter, more nimble, and best of all THINNER!

Yea, i'm more then aware of the smaller production big bore 2t's out there. I'd give my left nut for one of those 500cc maicos. I grew up with my dad riding big Maicos, so they hold a special place in my heart. I'll get one some day. Was thinking earlier in the year about rebuilding an old Sand Spider for some vintage racing

As for Service Honda, those guys are great people. I talk to AJ (who IS service honda) on pretty often as he frequents the KXriders.com forum. Hes a great guy and a true die hard two stroke fan. If we could clone him 50 times, this world would be a bad ass place, filled with huge displacement 2 stroke everythings! Had I a spare 10k you would have seen pics of a 2009 Service Honda Monster Edition Kawi 500AF

Granted it's 10K, but it is amazing what you get for that price.
    Works of art.
Again, nice work on a bitchen ride!
Do you show any more detail of the bike over there?

Nice looking scoot! Ditto on the pipe.

A buddy is in the process of converting an 05 CRF450 to a CR500 powered woods weapon. He's upgrading from an 01CR250 with a CR500 engine. Everyone should own at least one big bore 2 stroke in their lifetime.

its all in the technique. mine is a one kick starter when cold, and i can half kick when warm while sitting down like you would a 250.

its only really killed me a couple times, I did some carb work on it so it was a bone dry carb. took me about 30-40 FULL jumping kicks to finally get it to fire. Needless to say i was DEAD tired.

    Agreed.
My CR's were worlds easier to start than my little 450.
I really like what you did here...
