Default 8 Ball rules (Bar rules ?)

Was having a good time Christmas Eve with the wifes' huge extended family ,So Rhonda decided to take the celebration downtown Atascadero and hit a Old Carmozzi's saloon and played some hearty rounds of 8 Ball with all the "Kids" BUT it seems everyone has thier own version of the basic rules so what happens when you "scratch" and put a ball in at the same time ? (you can't pull one to "spot") is the game over ? School me please

you lose your shot the other person has the shot,a scratch is a scratch except on the eight ball

Horsepower determines how fast you hit the wall. Torque determines the size of the hole you make.

Tom we always played "ball in hand" when playing on a bar table. On a scratch the opponent can place the cue ball anywhere on the table they want for thier next shot and continue from there. The only sudden death would be pocketing the 8 ball by accident or in the wrong pocket.
At home where the ball could be pulled, it would be spotted on the far dot on the felt or directly behind as close as possible if another is in the way. The cue ball could be placed anywhere behind the first set of dots on the rails and must engage a ball beyond that line prior to contact with any behind it.

When you are in a bar, you are gonna play whatever the locals play and it is usually a hackers game. Obviously since it costs to pull out the balls, you just lose your turn and it "SHOULD be ball in hand. But the way they play in bars is Ball in hand BEHIND the head string. (behind the spot you from where you break) Like Mrjoshua posted, it should be ball in hand anywhere on the table but it's a bar and you will probably get a cue wrapped around your head.

I always thought a scratch in 8ball was to shoot from starting side, where the break began.
9ball has always been ball in hand
