    Default Who would you trust

I have to think that a long block from Merc is the way to go. I have seen powerheads online for 4800 with core. Should i go Merc only? I really want to do that, and that only. Just need some 2 cents from what the church has to offer. Is a rebuild by a vendor a bad deal? If it is not a bad deal who would you trust for a 300x rebuild. I do not know if I want to trust a rebuild that someone has done. I mean rebuilding an engine aka big block and a whacker might be different. It has to be right. The engine only lasted 2 hours or so and then dead, dead, dead oh yeah it was done twice by the same shop. Just want feed back. Not here to bad mouth anyone. I do not have records in my hands. Just going by what I have been told. Trying to get info so I can make a judgement on the new twins.

    Default I agree

The motor has o be rebuilt and if the owner would have it done there I would love it. His add ons are the best I have seen.

As I told you when we talked about this I believe the mechanic they used really didn't know what he was doing and should not of done the job to begin with.

If you're going to stick with the 300 X motor get a factory powerhead Longblock from Mercury only!

Otherwise my first choice is to put the twin new 300 XS motors on it , that is a all-around win situation if that is possible.

I know the Revrend and everybody else on here will agree you can't beat the factory power head.

This is a pay for it now or pay more for it later situation in my opinion.

Well that's good Kevin but stock factory is probably still more reliable and he is after reliability.

Nothing was said as to what is wrong with it or what has been done to it, but if it's just "blown up," Eric can put it back together stock for much less than the price of a new one.

Dave Bush Racing along with Simon motorsports could bulid you some serious power
    or
sell what you got and go with factory motors and warantees
The 300xs is going to burn far less fuel too!

I know that I have reached out to the church members, thanks for all the info. BHB I do want the 300 xs, for sure but everything has worked out for a longblock from merc. No rebuilds from a hack shop. Just the true powerhead. My only issue is that I can no longer find it online. Everything I have seen is discontinued from Merc. The owner and dealer have been great to work with. So I will be down to pick the boat up on Saturday. I know that I should have a great boat after a major set back.

I wonder if a long block comes with injectors? You may have had a injector pluging up that killed a good motor. Stoker 2001 (kevin) had that happen to him. If not I would have a flow and pattern test done on them and STV keith asks a very good question that must be addresed if using the old 300x motors

Every major service or overhaul I do the ecu if applicable and the injectors go out for service and cleaning. Simply bolting everything back together will more often than not put you right back to the same problem you had before.

Default So after the break down

What happened was it lost a single piston on drivers side lowest left head standing from rear looking to front. All plugs that were pulled had oil and looked ok not running lean. I will know more on Sunday night. Worked out a great price on the boat and bad motor. The injectors might be the issue did not even think of them. Thanks. The spark plug looks like it hit the top of piston. Time will tell and I will let all know how it goes. More than likely just going for a powerhead and turn this in as a core. I need to boat a long way and want peace of mind that a tow boat will not bring me back. I know I know repower with the 300xs but right now want to use these ( hopefully ) with out knowing the rangers name by heart.

Just got done tearing the old motor apart, AKA the one that was dead. YEP it is a done block and end cap. But I know have a Merc block un touched and only 212 hours with fresh water use. Just can not wait to go next year after the project is done. It is up and running but need to look at everything for a good season next year. Thanks again for all the leads and help.
