i'm looking at boats and came across a 94 with a 200 merc efi, with 545 hours....is that considered a lot? i know the rule of thumb with i/o is to try to buy a boat with 300 or less, does the same apply for outboards?

That is up there, but I have seen some motors go way more. Leakdown will tell you the story. Run a leakdown on each cylinder. 8% or more, it needs to come apart.

I'm well over 1200 hours and the damn thing just keeps on running and I use that cheap ass Valvoline mix. I've been through plenty of lower units and until a couple of weeks ago, nothing has ever broke on my promax itself. Yes, it is true, the tuner finally crumbled but the motor still ran great. Oh yeah, I pretty much run the damn thing wide open all day long everywhere I go.
