I've had fast outboards and v-drives both all my life. I've had a couple of outboards that ran mid 80's back in 1975. They would punish almost everything around here, and with my buddie and I diving to the bow light and then him melting back to the rt rear seat all in a choregraphed sequence, we actually got it to leave pretty hard. Had a lot of fun with them and not much motor maintence. .................. I always ended up with another v-drive. ................. They just have a magnetic cult following............. once you are hooked............. you are hooked....... If you don't have one you want one !!!![]()

You consider an 80mph O/B to be fast?

Back in 1975 It was real fast unless you had a v-drive which were as rare as camels grazing around here. Remember, the black max didn't come out untill about 1978, before that the hot outboard was a 225 6 carb inline twister. Those things only ran once a week if you were lucky. In 1973 I had a 19 v-drive hydro with a 13 to 1 bbc w/ enderly injection that ran 119 to 125 upon conditions, valve train products were not the same back then and cams have come a long way, I used to spend 2 to 300.00 a month making long distance calls to Cali. buying parts from various small speed shops every time it broke something. (plus I used to get totally trashed and run it high end and get kind of hypnytized by the whole vibe) not very smart but lucky to be here and warn others ! Now you can just get your credit card out call Jegs or somebody and have all the best stuff at reasonable prices in 1 1/2 days anywhere in the U.S. Back then you had to have an outboard for a back up if you wanted to make the scene every weekend !!!!

I owned a v-drive 35 years ago, loud, bouncy, no room, ect, ect, it was a Trailer Queen, I DON'T WANT ONE. Todays O/Bs run quick and fast and are not Trailer Queens. Most of these v-drive guy's have show boats
some run good but most of the time they are on the trailer or parked on the beach.
It's like, lets take our race boats to the river, stay within a mile or so of our trailer, call out the OBs and show them what a real boat runs like.
