Default 2.5 EFI Miid and lower section finish questions

Paint is starting to go on the mid section I'm guessing the previous owner moored the boat occassionally or possibly got into some salt???
Any suggestions for removing the old paint? Any suggestion for new materials... primer, paint/epoxy. Powder coat? Would there be any advantage to polishing the lower unit or would it be better to have some type of texture? - tnx

The best way to refinish your midsection is to pull it off and have it powdercoated (I just did this to my SST120 midsection). The guys doing the powder will take care of the prepwork (sandblast/tape-off mating surfaces). As for the lower, just keep the raw aluminum clean and free from corrosion with a green scotchbrite pad and some WD40. There are no advantages to polishing it, and once you polish it, it's a lot of work to keep it looking good. Just my .02 cents........

There is a chance that the paint is not bad try some light acid/descaler and it might just be alkali all over the mid! I thought the same thing until I hit with light acid and some polish and mine looked brand new!

My only fear of powder coating was if I scratch it I don't know a good way of touching it up. Built a sand rail years ago and the powder coating was immediately blasted away by the sand. That said the mid section should be out of harms way so I think I'll give it a shot. Lower unit has a little paint left on it so I'll remove what's left and take your advice. I owe you big time .02 cents right.

Unfortunately parts of it are beyond cleaning and polishing. I tried a citrus based hull cleaner marketed as Slimey Grimey that has worked on previous boats that had been moored in the river over the summer with great success.

I sanded the midsection, on mine, and painted with a sigle stage urethane black. The lower was stripped with a scothbright pad on an angle grinder, then spray canned with an acid etching primer, then painted with the black urethane single stage paint. 3 years now and no problems, except where I hit a floating tree branch. The acid etching primer is the key.
Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!
