Mark 78E available. On my boat. Runs great, new lower unit seals but kinda far. FL to be exact. On a 15' wooden boat from 1958. Looking to sell both. Everything functions great. Email me at alexlimonte@gmail.com if interested or call me at 305-240-2198 Alex.
Okay, my mistake. In doing some research I've discovered that the Mark 78 came out in 1958, and the Mark 78A was offered in 1959.
So, to clarify, what I'm searching for is a 1959 70 hp Mark 78A (more specifically, the electric start model which would actually be designated a Mark 78AE). I am however, willing to consider the 60 hp version from the same year which would be the Mark 75A (or Mark 75AE). Confused? I THINK I have it straight in my head.
Any color powerhead (white is most common, followed by red and the rare blue) is fine, but it must be a 1959 6 cyl Mercury.
Whew,
Eric
No thread jack intended here, just read thru the thread and wondered about my Godfather's boat.....
What year and model was a 'direct-drive' Merc 6 cylinder? What I remember is that it had no neutral, only direct forward/reverse. When you pulled the throttle back to where neutral is normally, that would kill the motor, you'd then pull back toward reverse and hit the starter button which was mounted to the underside of the throttle handle and the motor would start running the opposite way.
Was I dreaming as a kid?

Carl if you need one of those direct drives 6 cylinders, have one that runs like a top, controls, cables, and a nos factory mercury tach, maybe you can bolt it up to one of the fleet?![]()
What you're thinking of is what I'm looking for (and found BTW). The first 6 cyl Mercs featured what Mercury called "Direct Reversing", but what most people referred to by it's unfortunate nickname, "the Dockbuster". The 1957 Mark 75, 1958 Mark 75 and Mark 78, as well as the 1959 Mark 75A and 78A had this feature which I'm guessing was essentially a control system which simply reversed the polarity of the starter motor and ran the engine in reverse rotation (!). I'm presuming this was done because they felt the shifting mechanism of the day couldn't handle the massive 70 HP of these six cylinder brutes (?).
In fact, the first gear shift 6 cyl Mercs didn't debut until 1961.
