I would just try to stay away from anyting 1983 or older. I believe they started the finger ports in 84 those motors run so much better(Thats in the 200 mercs). Stoker is right the 245 carb 2.5's are great engines. Try to get over to Scream and Fly forums too, there are alot of outboard guru's there also.
Two thing to remember on an outboard set up is setback and engine height. I run my sst with almost 14 inches of setback and the prop shaft is almost 3 inches above the bottom of the boat. When a boat is setup right you will need NO positive trim to achieve top speed. If you over trim then you dancing on the edge.
