tach help on 2 stroke motor
hey guys i know little about outbaords so was wondering if any of you know how to wire a tach onto a small 25 hourse merc that is pull start. its an 84 two stroke. not sure if you can grab power off the stator or not. it needs a signal, power, and ground to work but i have no clue what wires to tap into. the test light does light up off a few wires but can get it to work. the tach is a faria and has a dial on the back to change poles. any help would be appreciated

Most tachs on 2 strokes are run off the voltage regulator circiut not off an ignition primary source like points. Stator voltage is alternating current (AC) that goes through the rectifier (diode pack) to become 12v DC current that charges the battery. Don't know if the 25 HP has a charging circuit.

It can definatly be done as RPM readings are the only accurate way to determine/select your Prop pitch
contact your local merc dealer,they might have a setup that is temporary as you only need to run it to see if your pitched correctly..i wouldnt bother hooking a tach up permanent on a 25
