Default Can someone give me a crash course on Outboards

Please explain what motors are good, I've heard 2.5, 300x, 300xs tossed around and I have no idea what they are or what is fast. I'm also curious as to what ones are 4-stoke, 2-stoke etc....Any motors to stay away from? Thanks in advance.

Very straightforward - where a lightweight smaller engine is needed, the 2.5s ('05 and earlier 280s and current 200XS ROS) are the best performing motors. The 280s will need 92 octane minimum fuel, 32:1 pre-mix and will burn a lot of fuel while providing incredible performance (375#s, 280hp @ 8,200 rpm). The 200XS ROSs will only need 91 octane, have oil injection and will burn almost half the fuel of the 280s, while not having the blistering performance of the 280s (the 200XS is actually 240hp at the crank @ 7,000rpm vs about 300hp at the crank for the 280). For larger boats that work fine with a 500#, 20" midsection motor, you cannot beat the new 300XS. It only requires 91 octane, is oil injected and uses about half the fuel of the older 300X or 300 Pro Max. Performance of the 300XS is near identical to an older 300 Pro Max, and about 30 hp shy (and some rpm) of a 300X. However, with under $2k in mods from Dave Bush Racing, the 300XS is near identical to a 300X in perfromance from every aspect (hp and rpm), and will still burn far less fuel. Hope this helps you!

Thank you very much that was very helpful. But it also leaves me with a couple more questions.
When you say oil injected does that mean you have a seperate reservoir for oil and the motor burns it? Kind of mixing it for you?
Do all outboards require 91 Octane or higher? I'm used to Mercruiser/mercury sterndrives that actually run better on 87 Octane.
Are these motors legal to run everywhere, I've heard places like Lake Tahoe have some restrictions?

Yes, the oil injection does the mixing, just fill the tank.

The high performance motors run the good pump gas

The 250xs will run on 87 octane

    The Optimax is Tahoe legal

What hull do you have in mind

The Chevy 496 is a great piece and so is the 502. They are both reasonably priced and you are not required to give up your man card to run one.

I've done the big block thing many times. I'm looking for some motors that can run close to full throttle all day long or for say 50+ miles. I want something turn key reliable with good gas mileage. I'm looking to buy a 25'-29' cat with twins.

You can run a 300xs full tilt all day

expect 2.5-3 mph with twins at 90-110 mph

I thought all 2 strokes are banned from Tahoe. So is the Optimax a 4 stroke or do they allow certain types of 2 strokes on Tahoe?
The worst day boating is better than the best day doing just about anything else!!

The Mercury Optimax is a direct injected 2 stroke motor that meets the EPA standards. To the best of my knowledge you can still run them at Tahoe. We did a couple years ago.
Tahoe, is such a hassle to boat on anymore we don't go now.
In the past we get there at sunrise to get a launch and parking spot at the public ramps, now you need to pay big bucks for a inspection and wait half the day to get it done

The best part is, that even after they figured out that the water clearity issues had nothing to do with 2 strokes and was 100% caused by development in the marsh lands, and run off, did they recend the law on 2 strokes? Kind of reminds me of things like excise tax on tires during WWII, we still have it.
